The Position

Police Lieutenant is a key member of the Fullerton Police Department command staff and manages and participates in assigned programs, function and activities for a bureau, staff function or work shift.  As a Police Lieutenant, you will be responsible for administering operations and preparing and evaluating field and staff reports, conducting internal investigations, and performing sworn police duties, both in and out of the field, in the prevention of crime and the enforcement of law and order, public safety and the protection of life.

Future Salary Increases:

  • 4% - July 2025
  • 4% - July 2026
  • 4% - July 2027

Other Pays:

  • Education Incentive Pay of 7.25% of bottom step of Police Lieutenant's base salary for a BA or BS degree
  • 10% Longevity Pay upon completion of 9 years of sworn law enforcement service. Years of law enforcement experience in another agency shall count toward the 9 years of sworn law enforcement service.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field

  • Possession of a California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Supervisory Certificate

  • Eight years of experience as a full-time peace officer including two years of full-time experience as a Police Sergeant and current rank of Sergeant

  • Class C California Driver's License and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment in this position

  • Per California Government Code §3100 - 3109, all public employees are declared to be disaster service workers and must take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation as required

  • The City of Fullerton's Conflict of Interest Code requires that a Police Captain file financial disclosure statements in accordance with state and local laws

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs

In order to participate in the selection process, an interested candidate must submit a completed City application, resume, cover letter and a copy of their POST Supervisory Certificate by the filing deadline. 

Testing is tentatively scheduled for the weeks of July 15 and July 22, 2024.

Only those candidates deemed most qualified will be invited to the assessment process with the City.  The final selection will be made by the Chief of Police.

Note:

Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process for Police Lieutenant will be placed on an eligible list, which will remain in effect for at least one year or until an insufficient number of candidates remain on the list.

Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.

Applicants considered for appointment as a Police Lieutenant will be subject to an extensive and in-depth background investigation including a polygraph examination.

All employment offers, including appointment offers to City of Fullerton employees, are based upon the successful completion of a medical examination performed by the City's designated physician, at City expense. Medical exams are administered to assess an individual's ability to perform the physical requirements of this position. In addition, City of Fullerton employees appointed to safety-sensitive classifications and all new hires will undergo a drug screen.

All appointees to this position, will serve a one-year probationary period.
