Duties Summary

Receives, stores, and issues police evidence and found property; performs a variety of clerical tasks; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) permanent full-time vacancy with the Hawai'i Police Department - Area II Operations Bureau in Kailua-Kona.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Receives evidence from the Field Operations Bureau and the Investigative Bureau.

  • Tags and accounts for all evidence.

  • Checks evidence for proper markings and identification.

  • Conducts inventory of all evidence stored.

  • Prepares monthly statistics on disposition of evidence.

  • Prepares monthly statistics on evidence received.

  • Maintains evidence log; maintains found property log.

  • Answers inquiries on evidence reporting procedures.

  • Answers inquiries on found property items.

  • Maintains numerical evidence report file.

  • Releases evidence to investigating officers for court presentation.

  • Releases evidence for identification to interested parties.

  • Stores confiscated weapons and assists in the disposition of same.

  • Acts as liaison between federal and military agencies regarding evidence of pertinence to them.

  • Testifies in court on the transaction of evidence.

  • Supervises assigned police cadets in the evidence room.

  • Witnesses the destruction of drugs and other vice paraphernalia together with vice personnel.

  • Accounts for and disposes of property received in coroner's inventory cases.

  • Receives property from the country districts on closed/suspended cases.

  • Transfers money to Finance Director upon forfeiture or conviction.

  • Records and stores property turned over to the department for safekeeping.

  • Records and stores property turned over to the department for auction purposes.

  • Handles all communication involving evidence inquiries.

  • Handles all correspondence involving the return of evidence to owners or finders.

  • Disposes of worthless articles.

  • Performs clerical and office work.

  • Handles cash transaction for reports and as required accounts for same.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from high school, and
  • two (2) years of storekeeping experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, or
  • two (2) years of law enforcement experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, and some typing experience, and
  • must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable motor vehicle operator's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: office procedures and practices; property identification and characteristics; storage principles and practices; laws and regulations on evidence and found property handling and disposition; purposes and uses of standard office machines.

Ability to: plan, set up, and maintain storage space allotments; keep records, summarize materials, and prepare reports; work harmoniously with others; follow oral and written instructions; operate typewriter or word processor.
