POLICE DETECTIVE

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: POLICE DETECTIVE

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to investigate crimes, identify suspects, protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to enforce county ordinances, state laws and regulations, arrest those responsible for the commission of criminal acts, and to perform special details and specific assignments within an assigned unit. The preparation of criminal cases for indictment and prosecution, both felony and misdemeanor offenses, the recovery of stolen items, the preservation of evidence and the presentation of evidence at trial.

Assist victims and/or their families in dealing with the realities of crime and assist them in understanding the procedures of prosecution. Provide some measure of support and closure for crime victims and/or their families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Receives, reviews and investigates criminal cases; maintains cases utilizing hard copy files and a records management system; determines case type or additional charges; works with victims to determine appropriate investigate outcome; reviews police incident reports, reviews victim and witness statements, further develops or refines those statements and reports to assist the District Attorney or Solicitor General in prosecution; conducts pre and post Miranda interviews of suspects or defendants in custody as developed in the course of investigative follow up.

Researches Georgia Code for laws, county ordinances, and makes certain that appropriate charges are brought forth; arrests and interrogates those responsible for the commission of criminal acts as described by department policy; conducts special and internal investigations at the direction of the Chief of Police; conducts, participates, and advises in surveillance, wire taps, sensitive investigations, undercover, and narcotics operations; ensures that preventative maintenance on assigned county equipment is conducted; this equipment includes county vehicle, handgun, and other miscellaneous equipment.

Answers telephone calls from victims, witnesses, and handles walk-ins; provides information, advice, and guidance; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary. Responds to questions, complaints, the general public, employees, superiors, and other individuals; attends community meetings and assists with community activities, programs, and crime prevention.

Prepares warrant applications for arrest and search warrants; prepares necessary reports and case summaries; prepares affidavits for search warrants, subpoenas; prepares and presents photographic line

ups; obtains certified copies of criminal convictions on defendants.

Attends shift meetings, seminars, and specialized/update training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and county operations, to promote improved job performance, and to maintain knowledge of changing policies, procedures, codes, and laws.

Secures evidence and statements for prosecution of offenders; prepares assigned cases for court

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Inspects, maintains and cleans assigned vehicle and work area; requests service and/or repairs as needed; maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.

Substitutes for co-workers in temporary absence of same; performs other administrative tasks as assigned.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years or age.

Must be a US Citizen. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Must meet all eligibility requirements to include a minimum of two (2) years of service as a law enforcement officer, above average performance evaluations, and above average work and attendance history.

Must be qualified to operate a motor vehicle and firearm, and must maintain firearms proficiency demonstrated by departmental qualifications as required. Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

May be required to attain and maintain additional certifications specific to assigned unit.

Selected candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the department and work any shift assigned, which may require working nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Selected candidate must also be available to receive and respond to telephone inquiries from home, while acting in an on-call status.

NOTE: This position is also a lateral entry position. Successful candidates will be hired as a police officer and appointed to the rank of Detective at the discretion of the Police Chief.

Candidates for lateral entry must meet minimum qualifications and have experience as a detective, investigator or other similar position.

NOTE: This is an assigned position at the discretion of the Police Chief.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 160 pounds).

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to temperature/weather extremes, strong odors/fumes, toxic/poisonous agents, smoke, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, animal/wildlife, disease/blood/bodily fluids/pathogenic substances, explosives, violence, bright/dim light, noise, vibrations, machinery, traffic hazards.
