Job Summary

This position is responsible for the receipt, analysis, and dissemination of sensitive and confidential law enforcement criminal intelligence information, financial records, case information and other data. The position will provide direct support to department law enforcement officers and agency command staff.

Minimum Requirements

100% -

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Essential Functions

  • Will be required to have a physical presence and regular and reliable attendance with the flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal business hours, as needs for cases may dictate.

  • Operate and or assist in the operation of several computer software programs.

  • Organize and prioritize tasks under pressure and short timelines.

  • Analyze complex topics to include financial records, phone records, social media records etc.

  • Conduct research regarding topics, events, or subjects having importance to agency command staff and policy makers.

  • Learn and comprehend local, state, and federal criminal codes.

  • Provide direct testimonial evidence during adversarial court proceedings.

  • Provide direct support to officers and investigators on case investigations and preparations, including preparation of search warrants, subpoenas and other documents.

Knowledge Required by the Position -

  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, municipal ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of computer databases, spreadsheet programs and other relevant web-based analytical software.

  • General knowledge of criminal investigation principles and practices.

  • Techniques for acquiring information from multiple sources and databases.

  • Skill in maintaining working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Skill in oral and written communications.

Supervisory Control -

The Police Sergeant assigned to investigations assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.

Guidelines -

Guidelines include state and federal law, city ordinances, and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

Contacts -

Contacts are typically with city staff, representatives of other law enforcement agencies, representatives of outside law enforcement partners, and members of the public.

Contacts are typically to obtain or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, or assist in facilitating advancement of investigations.

Physical Requirements

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment.

  • The work is performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
