The Police Department's Community Services Aide position is a part-time position (no benefits) with a preferred hiring rate of $11.96 - $13.75 per hour.

The Police Community Services Aide:

  • Assists citizens and visitors by answering the telephone;

  • Greets the public;

  • Gives directions;

  • Provides basic information and making referrals as appropriate.

  • Provides parking services by:

  • Enforcing parking regulations; patrolling streets and parking lots for parking violations; sending notices for unpaid parking tickets; recording parking tickets; informing supervisor of graffiti, litter, property damage and other issues related to the maintenance of commercial and public areas in the downtown area.

  • Directs traffic;

  • Checks traffic signals for proper operation;

  • Assists children crossing the street while going to/from school while stopping and controlling vehicular traffic at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely;

  • Controls children to assure that they conform to traffic regulations;

  • Reports motorists who fail to observe safe motor vehicle operation in school crossing zones;

  • Directs traffic at street crossings for parades and other special events as needed.

The Police Community Services Aide position requires the knowledge of basic English and traffic and parking ordinances, traffic laws and regulations and the ability to:

  • Use communications equipment, such as a multi-line telephone and service radio;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public in a courteous manner;

  • Work for short periods of time in inclement weather;

  • Handle routine clerical and record keeping functions;

  • Assist the general public in a friendly and efficient manner;

  • Follow oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, and walking; fingering, grasping, feeling and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, the operation of a motor vehicle or equipment, peripheral vision, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver's license required. Some experience working with the public preferred. Keyboarding skills preferred.

The successful candidate for this position must complete a satisfactory DMV record check, credit history review, drug screening, physical, polygraph and criminal background check.

Harrisonburg Police Department is seeking Certified Police Officers to serve the City's population of approximately 53,000 residents over seventeen-square miles. Officers within HPD experience the many specialized units within the department while also working in the City's hometown-style atmosphere. Applicants must hold a current certification for Law Enforcement Officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), the Federal Goverment or another state. A multi-phase review process will determine which applicants will be interviewed for possible hire. An eligibility list will be created from the review process. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Requirements: * Certified Police Officer through the Virginia DCJS, the Federal Government or another state. * Attend and successfully complete a physical agility testing. Testing date TBD; * High School Diploma or GED. College Degree or Military Experience preferred; * 21 years of age by January 1, 2019; * U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services; * Valid driver's license with good record; * Able to work 12-hour shift. (6am - 6pm, 6pm - 6am, or 3pm - 3am); * Good physical condition; * Must live or be willing to move within a 30-mile radius of Harrisonburg, VA. Salary: $39,665 - $53,185 annually, commensurate with training and experience, plus an excellent benefits package. Special Requirements: Successful applicants for this position will be subject to a DMV Motor Vehicle check and must complete a satisfactory credit history, drug screening, polygraph and criminal background check. Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
