Job Summary
The Police Captain, under the direction of the Chief of Police, is responsible for providing leadership and supervision to officers on UMC campuses.
Reports to: Chief of Police
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:
Assist Chief of Police in leading, planning, and directing the operations of the Police operations of UMC campuses.
Participate in management responsibilities that include but are not limited to: staffing, training, coaching, performance management, disciplinary actions, and employee engagement initiatives
Ensure timely response and reporting of incidents and/or complaints reported by staff, patients, or neighboring visitors, following Incident Command and Emergency Response protocols
Assumes management responsibilities for services and programs within the Police department focused on preserving order, protecting life and property, investigating crimes, and enforcing laws and municipal ordinances
Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the department
Plans, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for assigned staff and work assignments/projects
Participates in the development and administration of the department's annual budget and forecasting of funds for staffing, equipment, supplies, etc..; Monitor and approves expenditures ensuring necessary utilization of resources
Serves as liaison with the Chief of Police for community relations including public, media, press relations, and other law enforcement agencies; Participate in coordinating, planning, and scheduling special events and planning meetings as needed
Act on behalf of Chief of Police and/or Director, Security in their absence
All other assigned duties related to UMC Police Department
Education and Experience
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
BLS certification from the American Heart Association
TCOLE license in good standing
Advanced Peace Officer Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
Valid class C Texas Driver License
Complete the New Supervisors Course or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
Skills and Abilities
High degree of knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedures
Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement administration, organization, and management
Ability to apply methods and techniques used to provide a full range of law enforcement and crime prevention services and activities including investigation and identification, patrol, traffic control, records management, care and custody of persons and property, and crime prevention
Communicates effectively with patients, family of patients, visitors, and community partners
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
This position has much interaction with all departments and department leaders within UMC
Physical Capabilities
Extremely heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50lbs or more). Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking and at times running. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies and or persons. Manual dexterity and mobility, and intermittent exertion when performing treatments. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Near visual acuity and depth perception to perform set-ups and examine images for pertinent detail
Environmental Working Conditions
This position is exposed to indoor and outdoor changing temperatures. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, infectious organisms, agents and toxic chemicals is high.
