Job Summary

This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to assess candidates during their time at the basic police training academy. The evaluation process is designed to determine if the candidate can successfully complete the training and meet the qualifications required to become a police officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend, participate and complete in all phases of basic training through a certified Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) academy. This comprehensive training encompasses academic coursework, physical fitness training, firearms training, defensive tactics training, vehicle operations training, and skills testing.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with peers and instructors. Adherence to University policies, procedures, and guidelines, including those related to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination, is essential.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to maintain a safe work environment and engage with the University community in a respectful and civil manner. Additionally, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to plan, organize, and listen effectively, are crucial for successfully completing the basic police training and meeting the qualifications to become a police officer.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a high school diploma and eligibility to attend a P.O.S.T basic training academy required.

Must be able to successfully pass background investigation, psychological exam, physical exam, and physical agility test.

  • Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing

Licenses / Certificates

Driver license required.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Hiring Rate: The hiring rate for this position is $6,112 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,934 - $6,418 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Additional Information

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Due to the nature of this position, current CSULB employees are subject to a criminal record check unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSULB within the past 12 months.

This position serves as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and Executive Order 1107. Incumbent is required to promptly report allegations of Clery qualifying crimes that occur within a campus' Clery geography.
