SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this position performs tasks associated with maintaining the police building facilities of the City of Amarillo. Duties include service/maintenance of HVAC package and chiller systems, as well as preparing assignments for subordinates, training personnel on energy management systems and operating maintenance and test equipment. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as necessary by the department, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Orders supplies.

  • Performs specialized installation, maintenance and repair functions on various types and/or makes of mechanical equipment including boilers, chillers, compressors, motors, cooling towers, exhaust fans, gas and electric fired heating and air conditioning equipment, sensors, thermostats, ductwork, sheet metal, minor electrical system and control troubleshooting and repair and other building system components.

  • Maintains a computerized energy management system.

  • Instructs others, ensuring system is utilized correctly to obtain optimum efficiency.

  • Makes recommendations on maintenance projects and also on items for budget.

  • Performs all maintenance functions of a Building Mechanic, when needed.

  • Adheres to all safety standards and corrects any safety hazards found.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of four years of building and facilities maintenance experience, including at least three years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing HVAC and mechanical systems and equipment. Certification HVAC or electrical fields required, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Valid Texas Driver's License required.

A Police Department employee must have an excellent reputation to maintain the public's trust in the Police Department. The following factors would automatically disqualify an applicant: Any felony or Class A misdemeanor conviction; Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last 5 years; any conviction of family violence; currently under indictment for any criminal offense; or a discharge from military service under less than Honorable conditions. The following factors could disqualify an applicant: Any illegal possession or use of a controlled substance; excessive traffic convictions; or a history of bad debt.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of products and hazardous materials associated with building mechanical systems and equipment.

  • Possess experience in and knowledge of the principles and practice of heating and air conditioning (HVAC) and boiler installation, maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to operate electric tools, hand tools, testers, gasoline powered equipment, all types of pumps, boilers, air conditioners, gas cutting torches. electric welders, lathes, routers, multi-meters, table saws, refrigeration testing and reclamation devices and other tools and equipment common in building systems maintenance.

  • Ability to operate computerized lighting and sound equipment.

  • Ability to operate specialized electronic control systems for HVAC and other mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.

  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.

  • Ability to learn new software and improve processes with existing software.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.

  • Ability to safely operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as scissor lifts, forklifts, vehicles or commercial mowers.

  • Ability to safely operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment.
