NV5 is seeking an experienced Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineer II to develop plans, specifications, and reports on a number of concurrent projects with supervision from senior engineers. They will perform assignments designed to develop professional engineering work, knowledge, and abilities, requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks.

The ideal candidate will have 4-7 years of professional engineering experience.

Please note this is a hybrid position requiring minimum 2 days in the Andover, MA or Braintree, MA office location.

Responsibilities

Performs Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering tasks under the supervision of a senior engineer and/or department head including, but not limited to the following:

  • Develops plans and specifications for concurrent projects.

  • Researches, specifies, sizes, and selects equipment.

  • Obtains and documents field data by conducting field visits on project sites both in state and out of state. May require overnight travel.

  • Produces site observation reports and final punch lists.

  • Edits master specification sections to be project specific.

  • Prepares studies, drawings and sketches as required.

  • Performs technical analyses.

  • Reviews shop drawings and RFIs.

  • May communicate with clients and contractors, on occasion, to resolve issues with engineering designs.

  • Works with other disciplines to provide a fully coordinated design.

  • Obtains knowledge of building codes and stays current with building code changes.

  • Performs BIM/CAD functions proficiently in the Plumbing and Fire Protection disciplines and will use Revit and/or AutoCAD MEP software to transfer design concepts to a format acceptable to the client, architect and/or construction company in accordance with NV5 standards.

  • Attends in-house seminars and approved educational opportunities outside of the office.

  • Participates in technical and professional societies. Must be a member of at least one trade specific organization (NFPA, SFPE, ASHRAE, ASPE, AIA, etc.).

  • Perform hydraulic calculations utilizing current company programs.

  • Other duties as necessary and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection or Mechanical engineering is preferred.

  • A qualified candidate for this position will have four (4) to seven (7) years of consulting engineering experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems and developing plans and specifications for a variety of facility types.

  • Must be highly proficient in the use of Revit and AutoCAD MEP as design software. A CAD and Revit assessment will be performed to verify skill level.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of plumbing and fire protection engineering principles.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of applicable fire protection design codes including but not limited to the latest editions of International Fire Code (IFC), NFPA 13, and NFPA 14.

  • Knowledge of Factory Mutual (FM) design guides is highly valued.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of life safety and building codes, including NFPA 54, NFPA 50 and 99 codes, applying to medical/specialty gases.

  • Familiarity with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering is highly valued.

  • Familiarity with the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) Handbook of Plumbing Design is highly valued.

  • Must be able to travel to project sites both in and out of state, as needed or required. May require overnight travel on occasion.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels, vendors, and clients.

  • Must always conduct themselves in a professional manner.

  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT) is preferred for all engineers at this level.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) Registration is highly desired for candidates with +4 years of experience.

  • Knowledge of HydraCalc software is highly valued.

  • Certification in Plumbing Design (CPD) from the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) is highly valued.

  • Certification in Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, Level III or IV, from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) is highly valued.
