This role is distinguished from the Senior Plumbing Inspector by its focus on hands-on inspections and adherence to guidelines. The Senior Plumbing Inspector performs more complex, technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Plumbing Inspector or the Senior Plumbing Inspector classification. The range for the Plumbing Inspector is $24.89 - $28.63 per hour; and for the Senior Plumbing Inspector is $27.45 - $31.57 per hour.

Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Plumbing Inspector is responsible for conducting on-site field inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable plumbing and mechanical codes.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Plumbing Inspector series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Plumbing Inspector, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Conducts field inspections of ongoing construction to ensure compliance with all applicable plumbing and mechanical codes.

  • Conducts inspections to determine if existing properties are being maintained in compliance with applicable codes.

  • Responds to requests for code interpretation and application from contractors and property owners.

  • Maintains records of completed inspections and enters results into computer or IPad.

  • Reviews plans and specifications on-site to ensure construction is in accordance with City-approved plans and check for code deficiencies and local zoning requirements.

  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

  • Complies with all written City and department policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work in a professional team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent determines if new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable plumbing and mechanical codes and ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: National, regional, and City plumbing and mechanical codes and ordinances.

Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: One (1) year of experience conducting construction or plumbing inspections.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). Master or Journeyman Plumbing License (required). State of Texas Plumbing Inspector license (ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).

Senior Plumbing Inspector

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Plumbing Inspector, Senior is responsible for conducting on-site field inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable codes.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Plumbing Inspector series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to work in a professional team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect.

  • Participates in special projects.

  • Provides support to supervisors.

  • Completes plan reviews as needed checking for code deficiencies and local zoning requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: National, regional, and City plumbing and mechanical codes and ordinances.

Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: Three (3) years of plumbing inspection experience.

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law).

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City and private buildings, facilities, and construction sites, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to operate varied tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing field inspections. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

Employees work in and around various buildings, facilities, and construction sites and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, heights, mechanical and electrical hazards, dust and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
