The Incumbent serves as a Plumber in the Maintenance and Repair Unit. The function of the unit is the maintenance and repair of utilities and mechanical equipment serving the facility. The incumbent performs journeyman level installation, repair, assembly, and maintenance of water, sewage, drainage, air, gas, and vacuum systems and related equipment and facilities in accordance with pertinent state and local codes.

The Plumber duties include but are not limited to:
Completes assignments for work received orally and through work orders, building plans and blueprints; plans and lays out the needed routing, placement, slant, slope and fall of systems and proper operation of systems and equipment.
Determines the parts (pipes, elbows, valves, traps, and unions, etc) are the proper kind and size needed for proper operation of systems.
Tests and makes needed adjustments to systems and equipment for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions.
Indicates lines and points on walls, floors, ceilings, and open areas or sets stakes to locate pipe routes, inlets, outlets, connections, fixtures, and equipment and prepares working sketches as required.
Determines the routing of pipes and location of such plumbing fixtures, accessories and equipment as inlet, vent pipes, valves, meters, gauges, hangers, brackets, and water, sewer, gas, and air connections and repairs plumbing systems.
Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems.
Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, for example: sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. The incumbent must perform tasks in tiring and uncomfortable positions such as standing, bending, stooping, or crouching, kneeling, crawling or prone positions. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
The work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in extreme weather conditions. Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, bio-hazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises. Incumbent performs tasks in steam tunnels, attics, crawl spaces and trenches where he is exposed to possible burns from hot water and steam, dampness from leaks, filth from sewers, waste traps and other breeding places for bacteria. He is subject to cuts, bumps, bruises, danger of falling from scaffolding or ladders with occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, and has frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, and infections. Occasionally makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present.
