Location: New Port Richey & Wesley Chapel
General Description: Advanced specialized work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES: All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an Emergency. During an Emergency employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
Essential Job Functions:Operates one or more wastewater treatment plants; knows proper operational procedures of treatment and equipment. Recognizes changes in operation.
Obtains and analyzes samples. Keeps continuously informed of best operating practices. Participates in short schools when available.
Operates processing equipment and sludge processing equipment. Maintains wastewater treatment plants, including grounds maintenance, custodial services, minor maintenance and repair of processing equipment, and painting. Sets up preventive maintenance schedules, cleans plant processing equipment, knows expected efficiencies of all units, is aware of safety hazards, advises supervisors of problems, and uses sound judgment in expenditures.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, employees and other agencies. Maintains an accurate and well-organized system of operating records. Fills out and completes required operating reports filed with State agency.
Prepares routine correspondence for supervisor or lead operator. Reads plans and blueprints of facilities. Uses sound judgment in day-to-day activities. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of methods and practices of typical sewage treatment and of standards and normal operating procedures applicable to treatment.
Knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment. Knowledge of the implications of improper sewage treatment for community health and well-being.
Ability to inspect machinery and other mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.
Ability to read meters and charts accurately, to maintain simple records of shift operations, and to perform simple chemical analyses accurately.
Ability to adjust treatment procedures to meet requirements of volumes to be treated.
Ability to read technical manuals for comprehension.
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.
May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to climb, stoop, squat, bend, and walk frequently. Ability to communicate effectively using speaking, hearing, writing, and vision skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid State of Florida Class "B" operator license in wastewater.
Applicants with a valid State of Florida Class "C" operator license in wastewater may apply, if selected; the hourly rate would be $16.29. Applicants that are hired with a State of Florida Class "C" operator license in wastewater must obtain a State of Florida Class "B" operator license in wastewater within three years from the date of hire to meet the minimum qualifications of a Plant Operator B. Must possess a valid driver's license.
