General Functions

The OPERATOR working as a member of a team or alone, under the guidance of a Supervisor, provides for the safe operation of water or wastewater facilities in compliance with federal, state, local and Company requirements for the operation of water treatment, distribution, storage facilities and/or wastewater collection, lift stations or treatment facilities. Performs customer service orders.

Responsible for the operation, routine servicing and care of a wide variety of specialized equipment and apparatus in a plant/treatment facility including pumps, motors, chemical preparation and feeding; physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment and/or water treatment processes; control equipment and monitoring equipment. Maintains records of operations, completes and submits routine and special reports as assigned. Inspects all mechanical equipment for proper operation, performs normal lubrication, adjustments, seal packing, minor maintenance and minor repairs as necessary. Performs related field and laboratory tests, which are necessary to monitor and control the facilities, and makes necessary adjustments to equipment, processes and chemical feeders, as test results may indicate and as instructed by the Supervisor. Operates and assists in repairs to water / wastewater systems and plants; responds to customer service calls. Trains other employees in the operation and maintenance of the facilities including maintenance, repairs, laboratory work and safety as required. Performs all duties of OPERATOR as necessary, as well as other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Responsible for startup, shutdown, operation and periodic checks of water and wastewater treatment processes, components and equipment at water and wastewater facilities.

  • Adjustments of plant equipment such as pumping systems, chemical feeders, auxiliary equipment, and control systems storage tank levels and pump stations indicators.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as operating adjustments, cleaning and painting equipment.

  • Perform routine maintenance of plant grounds and buildings such as painting, cleaning, snow removal, and other repairs.

  • Load and unload chemicals used at the treatment plant.

  • Perform corrective maintenance on plant mechanical equipment.

  • Maintain plant records such as operating logs, chemical feeds, temperature, levels, and pressures on various process systems and associated equipment located throughout plant facilities.

  • Monitor flows, pressures, chemical feeds, levels and water quality indicators.

  • Collect water/wastewater samples and perform laboratory tests.

  • Must be able to comprehend analytical methods described in "Standards Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater".

  • Record all operating data on daily work sheet from laboratory analysis and flow metering equipment.

  • Conduct safety inspections and follow safety rules and procedures.

  • Communicate effectively with other operators and supervisors on the technical level expected for the position.

  • Call out employees in other departments as directed by supervision.

  • Attend and participate in operational and safety training programs as directed by management.

  • Must be available for overtime and call as well as weekend and holiday coverage.

  • Works in all weather conditions.

  • Must have the physical strength and stamina to perform the tasks, work and laboring duties of the position.

  • Performs field service work such as water main repairs, sewer main cleaning and blockage removal, water meter change-outs, fire hydrant repairs, valve maintenance, customer service orders.

  • Interact with fellow employees and the public, in a professional can courteous manner at all times.

  • Tasks as assigned by supervision.

Education and Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent; must have the ability to perform mathematical calculations related to the job with speed and accuracy, and communicate effectively both orally and written

  • Possession of a valid OEPA Class I water and Class II wastewater license, or the ability to obtain said licenses within thirty-six (36) months: 1 within twenty-four (24) months and the second license within thirty-six (36) months of date of hire. License premiums by class will be paid for candidates who currently have OEPA water and/or wastewater licenses.

  • At least four (4) years' experience in the wastewater treatment field; water treatment experience is preferable but not required.

  • Possession of a valid Ohio drivers' license at the class level required by the State to operate the fleet equipment associated with the job.

  • A basic knowledge of the principles and safety practices of wastewater or water distribution, pumping, collection, and treatment, each as they may apply to his area.

  • A basic understanding of the mechanical, chemical and biological processes and related equipment, as well as an awareness and alertness regarding operational modification, which may be necessary in both routine and emergency situations, is required.

  • Intermediate level of computer literacy Excel, Word, etc.

  • New employees start at $3.00 per hour less than the classified rate and advance at $1.00 per hour each ensuing year until achieving the classified rate.

  • The Company retains the right to adjust the starting pay based on the candidate's qualifications.

The roles and responsibilities are under the direction of the Operations Manager and are assigned in alignment with the business unit succession planning initiatives. From there, the individual will continue to be mentored and developed while progressing through the ranks of leadership and beyond. The Operations Management Trainee is expected to be able to travel and relocated dependent on what opportunities arise. This role reports to the Operations Manager and works closely with all members of the management team with increasing decision making responsibility over time. Responsibilities * Assist in the EH&S functions consisting of preparing for the RAS audits and establishing corrective actions from the RAS audit, WEIMS management, ISN contractor assistance and environmental functions. * Perform entry level job duties in all departments in order to fully understand the production process * Use working knowledge of production process, machines and materials to train and evaluate production employees. * Develop a deep understanding of business operations including but not limited to supply chain, sales, safety, quality and production operations * Learn the customer sales/shipping function and assist in troubleshooting when necessary to ensure all orders are processed on time * Identify opportunities to make changes, cut costs and improve efficiencies where appropriate. * Assist the facility in completing Transformation requirements and projects * Learn the quality system, scheduling system and flow of work orders from planning to completion and be able to fill in as needed. * Determine workforce requirements for department and assists with the hiring process as well as engage in performance management conversations with production employees. * Execute tasks and projects with accuracy and timeliness as assigned.
