Essential Job Functions for Mechanical Foreman:

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Lead and manage operations with an assigned crew including, but not limited to, supervising operators/labor, managing materials and equipment, quality control, job site, and coordinating with other foremen superintendents for the best utilization of PSCC resources.

  • Be knowledgeable of construction plans and specifications. Execute work according to plans and directives received from the Superintendent. Communicate regularly and effectively with the Superintendent.

  • Be knowledgeable of all technical components of pipe, concrete, and process equipment installation. (Includes gravity sewer, storm drain, water main, force main, fire main, lift stations, conduits, underdrain, flanged piping, forming concrete placement, layout, grade etc.)

  • Be knowledgeable of HVAC systems, sheet metal and rigging.

  • Know what resources are included in the assigned work and manage accordingly. (Permanent materials, construction materials, equipment, small tools, etc.)

  • Know and understand the production schedule of the work being performed. If production goals are not provided, ask. Without compromising safety, always strive to maintain the production schedule.

  • Maintain accurate and hard short term schedules. ALWAYS run your project, DO NOT let it run you. A General Plant Foreman should always have a schedule for activity one week ahead.

  • Attempt to schedule surveying, materials, equipment moves, etc. at least a week ahead to give everyone an opportunity to plan their work to meet your needs.

  • Minimize crew downtime. Always have a back-up plan of work to be performed if your original plan of work is stopped due to equipment downtime, delayed materials or surveying, etc.

  • Know the Petticoat-Schmitt safety rules and all O.S.H.A. rules. Maintain safety compliance on all projects. You are the safety manager. Lead others and hold everyone the job site accountable. Safety is always first. Plan for safety, always!

  • Always start the day and new work activities with a Job Briefing. Make Job Briefings a part of your crew culture. On occasion, allow other crew members to do Job Briefings.

  • Ensure that all project documentation is timely and accurate (billing data, change orders, time sheets, production reports, daily reports, short-term schedules, force account info, locates, Environmental reports, near-miss reports, accident reports., etc.)

  • Maintain the accuracy of delivered materials, the unloading, storing, and installation. You are responsible for the materials involved in your work. If you do not have a material list to check the materials that are to be delivered, request one.

  • Maintain the quality of the work performed by your crew at all times. Evaluate the quality of delivered materials and subcontractors and double check as necessary.

  • Keep a clean and organized worksite. Hold crew members and subs to strict standards.

  • Keep trash to a minimum. Designate parking areas and keep equipment organized.

  • Know and understand the quality control standards required in the plans and specifications. (I.E. Densities, gravity pipe slopes, pressure testing, bacteriological test, pour cards, etc.) Construct all work according to plans and specifications.

  • Do NOT be the fast General Plant Foremen who leaves dig-ups, sloppy work, leaky pressure mains, damaged equipment and a sloppy work site in his trail.

  • Mistakes can happen, but avoid rework at all costs. We only get paid once to install our work.

  • Aim for zero punch-list projects. Punch-out the work as you go.

  • Keep jobsite environmentally compliant. Be aware of erosion issues and discharge of water from dewatering operations. (NPDES reports, erosion control, dewatering discharge, MSDS, contaminated material spill protection, sewage exposure, etc.)

  • Work with the Fleet Manager regarding equipment maintenance schedule and mechanical needs. Work together to minimize downtime and maintain the integrity of the equipment fleet. Do not tolerate abuse or neglect of equipment by PSCC employees.

  • Evaluate and dictate employee performance according to PSCC standards. Assist in evaluating, hiring and firing of your crew members.

  • Provide leadership, motivation and mentoring to your crew members. Be a team player as well as a team leader. To your crew, YOU ARE Petticoat-Schmitt. Lead and act accordingly.

  • Hold your crew accountable for all codes of conduct including but not limited to, attendance, late arrivals, P.P.E. compliance, safety compliance, work ethic, appearance,

  • Maintain current training in all applicable industry education. (Competent person, confined space, O.S.H.A. 10 hour, CPR/First Aid, NPDES inspection, and any other PSCC training.)

  • Commit to self-improvement and personal growth. Attend off-hour training and seminars for training and personal development.

  • Be dependable. Be the go to guy when a superintendent needs to get something done without worrying about it being done safely, quickly and accurately.

  • Provide positive inspector and client relations as well as maintaining a good company and industry image. Maintain a good attitude when representing Petticoat-Schmitt in public.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Technical Knowledge:

  • Effective communication skills

  • Ability to measure, perform construction math and calculate quantities.

  • Can set up and properly use a rotary laser, builders level and machine control.

  • PSCC and OSHA safety rules

  • MOT standards and rules

  • NPDES standards, rules, and best management practices (BMPs)

  • Basic IT skills can navigate smartphone and I iPad to fill forms and reports

  • Read and interpret plans, contours, agtek plans, MOT plans, and erosion control plans.

  • Heavy Equipment Operation

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand or sit for long periods; handle and manipulate controls on a repetitive basis. Ability to see well and distinguish between backup alarms, voices, and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites. Ability to climb in and out of equipment, ability to lift 40 lbs.

Environmental Adaptability:

Work outside in all weather conditions, and various locations and times of the day. Hard hat, hearing and eye protection, Hi-visibility clothing required.

Training and Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Competent Person training

  • Confined space training

  • NPDES/Erosion Control training

  • Math

  • Ability to work independently and self-motivated

  • Advanced MOT training.
