The Protective Solutions Division has an opening for a Plant Manager at our Shelbyville, KY location. Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, this position has operational and financial ownership over 100+ employees in a tier one automotive environment. There, he/she will drive a high octane manufacturing operation with an emphasis on collaboration while working closely with all areas of leadership to fulfill company objectives.

Manufacturing systems include complex processes to form and integrate lightweight material, delivering stringent cost, quality and performance goals. A relentless focus on continuous improvement is exercised in all areas to ensure process and manufacturing cost are always the most competitive in the industry.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead the charge in SONOCO's safety first philosophy

  • Have proven success managing full P &L

  • Be operational and business minded

  • Lead and positively motivate a management team of 8 direct reports

  • Possess TS16949 quality system experience

  • Achieved a BA or BS Degree in Business or a related filed

  • Lead in building beyond status quo successes already achieved

  • Understand and mentor manufacturing discipline

  • Communicate well within the plant and externally

  • Treat all with respect

Manages the team of shift supervisors and team leaders. Provides backup and support to Plant Manager. General Responsibilities: * Ensures a safe working environment is maintained. * Provides leadership, training and coaching to Shift Supervisors. * Coordinates all production activity with plant manager and other functions to assure smooth operations. * Coordinates staffing activity with HR and temp agency to assure adequate manpower for production. * Develop and implement productions plans. Works closely with customer service and yard/warehouse manager to plan efficient production schedule. * Actively participates in quality, safety and process improvement activities. * Coach machine operators and temps. * Responsible for employee shift schedule to include: work station assignments/rotations, training, vacations, breaks, overtime assignment, back-up for absent, and shift rotations; also is the immediate contact with the staffing agencies when temps are needed. * Oversee production startups, shutdowns, and changeovers. * Conduct daily shift meetings. * Responsible to meet shift production goals. * Responsible for quality control. Make adjustments as necessary during shift to produce product within specifications. Reject product outside of specifications. * Operate within Quality Plan procedures and Job Safety requirements. * Responsible for providing a daily summary accounts shift log, then distribute it to Manufacturing; Maintenance Manager and Plant Manager. * Start up and troubleshoot machines and maintain, molds, materials, and auxiliary equipment, ensuring machines run within operating parameters. * Safe housekeeping standards are maintained at all times, ensuring a clean and safe work area. * Quality inspections are conducted per quality plan. * Ensures that all production reports; purchase requisitions; and accident/incident reports are prepared on the correct forms and are properly completed. * Enter production into Great Plains * Ensures weekly payroll is correct. * Handles disciplinary actions as needed. * Support Plant Manager responsibilities as assigned. * Other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: * Ensures that direct report(s) are adequately trained, equipped, and motivated so that the department responsibilities and goals can be accomplished in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner. * Communicates regularly with all direct report(s), both individually and as a team (if applicable), to ensure good two-way communication concerning progress and other issues. * Conduct employee performance reviews based on job descriptions to determine competency, knowledge, and contributions. Manages performance issues within company guidelines, working with Human Resources. * Complies with the Companys Human Resources policies and procedures, and promotes the awareness of, and compliance with, these policies by direct report(s). Key Competencies: * Problem solving and decision making abilities are essential for success. * Ability to function in a fast paced manufacturing environment where frequent interruptions will necessitate a reevaluation of priorities. * Exhibits sound and accurate judgment * Conveys information in a clear manner; ensures that others understand instructions or other information that is communicated Qualifications [Knowledge, Experience Skills]: Knowledge/Education Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred. Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required (Related work experience can be substituted for educational requirement.) Related Experience Required: * 2 to 5 years experience in the plastics industry * Supervisory experience desirable * A broad base of current technical knowledge to ensure that safety standards are met and efficiencies are maintained. * Knowledge of the manufacturing processes, procedures, and machinery. * Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers. Specific Skills/Knowledge: * Basic mechanical skills * Injection molding * Forklift operation * Safety standards * Leadership * General computer skills Certifications, licenses and or other special requirements: * Valid Driver's license and good driving record required Work Conditions: * Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. * Must be able to lift, push, pull frequently, and maneuver at least 100 pounds * Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, and safety toe shoes. * Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
