Position Purpose & Summary

This position is responsible for the daily execution of the Operations and Performance within the Springdale, AR processing facility. The focus of this position is safety, process efficiency, process improvement, customer solutions and personnel development.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for the management of two shifts of turkey production (primary processing, debone, grind, further processing) as well as leading our distribution center team. Additional leadership responsibilities include safety, food safety, operational excellence, employee relations, continuous improvement, capital planning, plant budgets and ensuring customer satisfaction. As a Plant Operations Manager and a member of the location leadership team, this position will lead 8 direct reports and 1,100 production associates

Principal Accountabilities

  • Implements and monitors employee and food safety program standards and goals for the Springdale plant. Accountable for all internal/external operating/regulatory procedures on employee safety and food/feed safety including strategic and tactical execution in alignment with Corporate

  • Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) and Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory (FSQR) Functions as well as government regulations.

  • Supports EHS/FSQR experts and oversees operations managers to ensure the most effective risk mitigation plans and regulatory compliance strategies are in place. Ensures all regulations are followed and reporting is accurately and timely.

  • Health & Safety: champions a culture of zero injury and illness.

  • Environmental: Reduces and proactively avoids environmental impact and potential risk to the businesses.

  • Food Safety: Accountable for eliminating risks associated with products. Ensures HACCP/USDA/FDA requirements are met in all food processes.

  • Educates/trains workforce in the food safety fundamentals and completes safety inspections and housekeeping audits.

  • Consolidates and analyzes aggregated EHS/FSQR incident data to identify risks (i.e. safety index, RIFR, food safety index, CFSRA and USDA/FSIS audits)

and to recommend revisions to operating policies as applicable.

  • Supports and maintains community relations that align with Cargill's corporate and business interests while addressing stakeholders/community needs.

  • Participates in customer, third party, and regulatory audits as Operations representative.

  • Maintains thorough understanding of site emergency action plan and prepare responsible individuals to execute the plan. Tests the plan periodically to ensure feasibility and that all personnel can perform functions.

  • Leads by example by active participation in the Behavioral Based Safety program and by working closely with barrier removal and ergonomic teams.

  • Monitors operations and maintenance of plant equipment and executes on operational priorities for the Springdale Plant.

  • Monitors operations/quality management deliverables to ensure customer and product/quality standards requirements are met within specifications.

  • Collaborates/partners with Ag, Logistics, Procurement, Commerical, and Supply Chain professionals to ensure availability of raw materials and ability to meet customer specifications and timelines.

  • Accountable for ensuring that customers are satisfied and that any inquiries, incidents and/or issues are resolved in a timely manner.

  • Develops and implements performance metrics for capturing, monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of corporate quality management activities and programs at the plant level.

  • Partners with internal/external stakeholders (i.e. customers, Engineering, FSQR, Sales, Technology) to define, adopt and monitor performance indicators to identify/measure quality performance in areas that impact the customers and recommend areas of improvement and innovation.

  • Directly collaborates with Business, Product Development, and Engineering departments to identify emerging trends and translate into long-medium term operational goals.

  • Accountable for Cargill Intellectual Property (IP) materials, processes and knowledge are protected and maintained.

  • Supports customer relationships by meeting businesses objectives and by understanding how operational performance impact internal/external customers.

  • Ensures and holds direct reports accountable for meeting and controlling operating expenses and established targets.

  • With direct oversight from Complex Manager, consolidates operations P&L budgets/metrics and understands how production expenditure/costs impacts businesses margins and pricing.

  • Prepares capital and operating budgets for the Springdale Plant to achieve short and medium term financial performance objectives set by the business.

  • Accountable for overseeing base and non-base capital investments projects that are consistent with business strategy and technology strategy

  • Partners with appropriate COEs (i.e. Product Development, commercial managers, Engineering PDGs, FSQR and EHS) to align medium/long-term businesses strategic goals in the development of plant capital investment strategies.

  • Accountable for the overall operational management of the Springdale Plant.

  • Implements operational efficiency improvements which may include, but are not limited to, labor efficiencies, sanitation practices, standardization of plant information manufacturing systems, quality control, safety, production reliability excellence and maintenance, operators best practices, etc.

  • Responsible for aligning overall team resources to execute against short-term and medium-term strategies and for meeting strategic operations goals in accordance with business and plant objectives.

  • Enforces a culture that builds, operates and maintains plants that are operational sound, safe, and efficient.

  • Leverages/deploys leading operational practices and aggressively raise the performance of poor departments by monitoring key performance indicators (i.e. labor efficiencies, yield optimization, energy/water usage reductions, operator safety indexes, etc).

  • Supports Reliability Excellence processes and ensures the reliability culture is foundational to operations.

  • Enforces common reliability processes and metrics (focus on eliminating the root-cause of reliability problems, REPI, CMES deployments, etc) to achieve targeted results from continuous improvement practices, and validates the importance of Reliability Excellence through key successes (scorecard and metrics control, total cost of maintenance, total cost of ownership, monthly review of compliance audits, etc).

  • Collaborates with COEs to identify, deploy and leverage opportunities for continuous improvements applicable to the entire business/platform.

  • Develops/supervises and provides coaching to direct reports including coaching Cargill's core values and guiding principles.

  • Develops/implements general workforce administration policies and programs in the areas of communications, staffing, training, evaluations, disciplinary actions and safety.

  • Develops/supports planning for future production workforce needs and participates in selection of employees.

  • Responsible for developing strong leaders and a most diverse workforce by seeking multiple approaches to source/attract diverse talent.

  • Incorporates diversity in succession planning and job fulfillment.

  • Implements and supports business and plant safety/food safety operational/ training programs and monitors employee performance records on a regular.

  • Accountable for workforce planning and accountable for successful training and on boarding of new/transferred employees as well as workforce engagement, recognition, development and coaching.

  • Leads and implements systems and processes to maintain a highly engaged workforce.

  • Holds direct reports accountable for actively addressing engagement issues and identifies/leverages best practices in engagement.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with 5 or more years of experience in industrial food manufacturing
  • OR High School Diploma/GED with 10 or more years of experience in industrial food manufacturing
  • 5 or more years of direct management/leadership experience (influencing, coaching, developing, and change management)
  • Ability to travel as needed up to 10%

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 or more years of poultry processing experience

  • Training in continuous improvement such as Lean Six Sigma

  • Bilingual in either English/Spanish or English/Marshallese

  • Working knowledge and experience with 3rd party food safety/quality audits

  • Demonstrated project management experience

  • Reliability Excellence deployment experience

  • SAP experience
