Plant Maintenance Technician: This is specialized and skilled technical work maintaining water and wastewater process equipment at the Cosme Water Plant in Northwest Hillsborough County and pumping stations in the City of St. Petersburg. Work involves inspecting, servicing, calibrating, and maintaining sophisticated electrical systems, telemetering devices, monitoring instruments and mechanical equipment, analyzing, diagnosing, and correcting mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment malfunctions. The Plant Maintenance Technician in conjunction with a Plant Maintenance Technician II and Plant Maintenance Supervisor may have some planning duties such as estimating manpower, materials, and supplies; providing training and guidance to assigned plant maintenance crews; maintaining records of inspection and repair activities; and planning, scheduling, and performing tasks in a preventive maintenance program for all plant equipment utilizing WACS and the creation of Work Orders as the work of record. Work requires considerable independent judgment and the exercise of specialized maintenance skills of a highly technical nature. Due to the critical nature of water and wastewater utilities, an employee in this position must be able to report to work outside of normally scheduled work hours to respond to emergency conditions and/or address urgent needs, at the discretion of management. This position may also be assigned to standby duties on a rotating periodic basis.

Plant Maintenance Technician II: This is advanced, specialized, and skilled technical work in the maintenance and repair of treatment and pumping instrumentation and equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations, with an emphasis on advanced electronics and electrical systems, including equipment calibration from component level to system loop calibrations at the Cosme Water Plant in Northwest Hillsborough County, and two (2) pumping stations located in the City of St. Petersburg. Work involves inspecting, servicing, calibrating and maintaining sophisticated SCADA equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLC's), variable frequency drives (VFD's), electrical systems, telemetering devices, monitoring instruments and control instrumentation; understanding PLC ladder logic and troubleshooting PLC process instrumentation related to water flow, tank level, and pressure; analyzing and diagnosing mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment malfunctions; estimating manpower, materials and supplies; providing training and guidance to skilled maintenance staff; maintaining records of inspection and repair activities including regulatory reports, calibration certificates and safety; and assisting with planning, scheduling and performing a preventive maintenance program for all plant equipment utilizing WACS and the creation of Work Orders as the work of record. Due to the sensitivity and required accuracy, work requires considerable independent judgment; the ability to make methodical, thorough inspections to determine operating conditions and needed repairs; and the ability to formulate and successfully carry out repair plans. Due to the critical responsibilities of this classification, an employee in this position must be able to report to work outside of normally scheduled work hours to respond to emergency conditions and/or address urgent needs, at the discretion of management.

Salary: $25.79 - $38.79 Hourly

The hiring department will consider applicants for the Plant Maintenance Technician I or II level, depending on qualifications, certifications, and experience. The entry level pay for Technician II is $26.56 hourly.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented with some technical course work in mechanical and electrical systems.

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.

  • Obtain and maintain a State of Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver License within 12 months of appointment to the position.

  • Have some experience at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, monitoring instruments, electrical devices, and mechanical systems.

  • Be available to work varied shifts and overtime, to include evenings, weekends and holidays and be able to report to work to respond to emergency conditions and/or to address urgent needs.

  • Possess basic computer and data entry skills.

  • Be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, an applicant must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

  • At the Technician II level, meet the following qualifications:

o Have considerable progressive experience at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of industrial plant or water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, monitoring instruments, electrical devices and mechanical systems including troubleshooting experience using the Hart Protocol.

o Have knowledge of plant instrumentation control and monitoring equipment and systems, including repair, preferably including experience with PLCs, SCADA, VFDs and telemetering devices.

o Have experience and knowledge of electronics communication equipment, including PLC's Allen Bradley Communication Protocols.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred Applicants:

  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver License.

  • Have five years of experience in journeyman level electrical control, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical work.

  • Have progressive experience in the maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, monitoring instruments, electrical devices and mechanical systems or other related industrial plant maintenance.

  • Are able to read and understand blueprints, construction diagrams and schematics.

  • Are skilled in the use of the specialized tools of the trade.

  • Have experience leading and instructing subordinates in plant maintenance work.

  • Have experience troubleshooting PLC and understanding PLC ladder logic.

  • Have experience calibrating and troubleshooting process instrumentation related to water flow, tank level and pressure.
