About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Plant Maintenance Mechanic or Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic for the Water Resources Department. The purpose of this role is to maintain, inspect, and repair water production facilities, including the water production plants, tanks, pump stations, and related assets. Depending on the applicant's credentials they will be considered for the entry-level in the Plant Maintenance Mechanic series or the Lead position.

  • What you'll be doing:

  • Conducts inspections at water production facilities: inspects piping and controls, generators, electric equipment, computer and communication systems, roofs, foundations, interior and exterior walls, fencing, road quality, landscaping, and related assets; tests and verifies assets for proper operation and function; identifies items needing repair or replacement; and prepares and maintains work orders for identified items.

Performs preventative maintenance at water production facilities: changes filters, belts, and fluids; fixes leaking pipes; paints buildings; removes debris and trees that could damage structures; greases, lubricates, aligns, and replaces bearings on electric motors and pumps; replaces and/or repacks seals; and flushes water lines.

Performs repairs at water production facilities: troubleshoots problems with water production facility systems and assets; utilizes electric meters, computer software, trend charts, blue prints, technical publications, and water quality measurement tools and other resources; diagnoses and resolves leaks, electric problems, water quality problems, communication failures, distribution system failures, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) failures; repairs or replaces pumps, including impellers, seals, gaskets, and bearings; fits, threads, and restrains pipes; and documents problems and resolutions.

Performs other installation, maintenance, and repair work: installs and maintains electric equipment, including switchgear, panels, variable frequency drives, starters, lighting fixtures, transformers, outlets, switches, breakers, and standby generators; installs pumps and motors; and installs and repairs roofs, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and other systems and components.

Operates and maintains various tools and equipment to complete essential functions, such as vehicle, generator, hand tools, electric meter, power tools, pumps, gas monitor, utility locator, heavy equipment, or other tools and equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, vendors, the public, outside agencies and organizations, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, correspondence, job estimates, incident reports, on call schedules, work orders, inspection logs, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing (edit as appropriate) word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

  • Lead Position will lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex/problem situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

High school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in industrial mechanics, electronics, or a related field; supplemented by one year of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Water Distribution license or the ability to obtain one within 6 months. Class B (or higher) Water Distribution License and Maintenance Technologist II (or higher) certification is required for the Lead designation.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
