This is semiskilled wastewater or water plant equipment maintenance work. Work involves serving as an assistant to a Plant Maintenance Mechanic II by participating in maintenance activities designed to keep the water or wastewater plant equipment operational.

Preventive maintenance tasks are assigned to familiarize the employee with the equipment and materials used on the job and to assist proficiently with any maintenance task. Instructions are specific initially and may be detailed in nature, with the incumbent expected to have some previous knowledge of general maintenance procedures or of the use of hand tools, and the ability to learn plant maintenance procedures. Technical on-the-job guidance is received from a Plant Maintenance Mechanic II or a supervisor.

Duties require working outdoors in all weather conditions and performing light-to-heavy manual labor. Work may also require working around operating machinery and/or in tight quarters or in or around sewage fumes. Duties may also involve driving pickup trucks or other trucks to and from the worksite.

Work is reviewed in progress or upon completion for the safe application of work rules and for the quality and quantity of work performed.Any one position may not include all of the specific duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks on plant equipment, including lubricating equipment, changing packing on pumps and other equipment, and other tasks designed to familiarize the employee with the preventive maintenance requirements of plant equipment.

Performs a variety of building and grounds maintenance tasks at the plant, including washing and painting walls and ceilings, cleaning exhaust fans, mowing grass, changing light bulbs, repairing or replacing plumbing fixtures, and other tasks.

Conducts inspections of plant equipment; checks equipment operation for malfunction; diagnoses problems and discusses problems with higher-level mechanic. Replaces defective plant operating equipment; repairs equipment by replacing parts; adjusts equipment for proper or required operation. Installs new equipment or modifies existing equipment when parts are not available; removes and overhauls equipment; fabricates parts and equipment, as needed, using machine or welding equipment.

Performs general maintenance required to keep workplace and tools clean. Performs related work as assigned. Graduation from high school, vocational school, or GED, and experience in performing general maintenance tasks that require the operation of hand and power tools; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Ohio commercial driver's license, Class "B", with tanker and air brake endorsements. 180 days to obtain the CDL, if necessary. Requires the ability to pass a written exam with a minimum score of 70% Some knowledge of the operation of hand and power tools used in plant maintenance. Some knowledge of the basic operation of equipment maintained.

Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required in maintaining plant equipment. Ability to perform basic maintenance tasks independently and to learn the operation of a variety of specialized tools and equipment used on the job. Ability to learn the more complicated maintenance or operational procedures and to become proficient in applying these procedures within a reasonable period of time after employment.

Ability to perform hard physical labor under all kinds of weather conditions. Ability to do confined space entries. Ability to enter manholes or access hatches twenty-four inches in diameter.

Ability to climb ladders and work in high locations. Ability to work safely around operating equipment in tight quarters and work safely around or in sewer fumes as required by the position. Ability to read, understand, and apply technical instructions in operational and maintenance manuals, blueprints, and schematics. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and the general public.
