Job Summary

The Plant Maintenance Technician is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the operation of all plant systems and equipment. Including but not limited to balers, conveyor belts, gearboxes, electrical motors, pulleys, shafts and bearings. This position must respond to all system failures by taking appropriate corrective action by completing or assigning the repairs needed to ensure that systems are operational and are functioning safely and efficiently. This position generally reports to the Plant Maintenance Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Performs repairs in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules and OSHA. (Occupational and Safety Health Act) requirements.

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspection (PM); diagnose, repair, and rebuild major equipment/components including but not limited to balers, conveyors, hydraulic power packs, eddy currents, electro-magnetic belts, optical sorters, diverters, compressors, trash compactors, motors, glass breakers, wire tie systems, fans, pumps, forklifts, front-end loaders and building equipment.

  • Maintains DEI (Daily Equipment Inspections) backlog.

  • Establishes and adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules and advises Sr. Plant Maintenance Manager if additional work is needed, or cannot be completed within the Standard Repair Times (SRTs).

  • Inspects the quality of third party repairs and or rebuilds.

  • Recommends measures to improve production, equipment performance and product quality

  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.

  • Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.

  • Ability to perform under limited supervision.

  • Requires a flexible work schedule, which may include nights and weekends to support operating schedule and the needs of the facility.

  • Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate/OSHA Standards, and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

  • Proficient in welding and fabrication.

  • Have knowledge of single and three phase electrical systems.

  • Have knowledge of electrical control systems.

  • Have knowledge of hydraulic systems.

  • Have knowledge of pneumatic systems, including air compressors.

  • Safely operates tools and equipment needed during the repair and servicing of equipment.

  • Diagnose defects and repair a variety of equipment and vehicles.

  • Technicians are required to provide their own basic tools to perform routine maintenance and repairs of equipment.

We seek to understand how functional interactions between organisms lead to beneficial or detrimental outcomes for the host. One of the core approaches that we use is high-resolution mass spectrometry based metaproteomics. The Kleiner Lab is part of the NCSU Chancellor's Excellence Cluster on Microbiomes and Complex Microbial Communities, which provides a vibrant community of researchers at NCSU and frequent exchanges with the community across campus. The Kleiner Lab is involved in collaborative research at NCSU, nationally and internationally. Essential Job Duties The Kleiner Lab seeks to hire a Research Lab Manager to support the ongoing research program on complex microbial communities, microbial symbioses, and metaproteomics in the Kleiner Lab at NCSU (www.kleinerlab.org). The main responsibilities will be to (1) maintain the inventory and equipment in the lab with support from postdocs and students, (2) provide safety training and ensure that safe lab practices are followed by all personnel, (3) independently run and report on research projects aimed to generate data for grants, research manuscripts or academic/industry collaborators, (4) provide training on specific equipment and methods to students, postdocs and visiting scientists, and supervise undergraduate students who provide basic laboratory support for the Kleiner Lab. Other Work/Responsibilities The incumbent will be required to drive to field locations. Depending on the funding situation and project priorities, up to two weeks of travel per year may be required for fieldwork and the yearly group retreat. For fieldwork, the incumbent would be an active member of a small research team collecting samples at agricultural research stations or marine field stations. Support in the form of logistics, sampling, and sample processing would be needed. Minimum Education/Experience * Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biochemistry, or a related life science field and at least 3 or more years of relevant experience, or relevant independent research experience and education. * At least two years of experience in a laboratory using molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology methods. Departmental Required Skills * Good written and oral communication skills. * Experience with microbiology methods such as cultivation and preservation of bacterial or phage cultures, as well as use of a microscope for cell counting and observation of phenotypes. * Skilled with use of basic molecular biology methods such as PCR, protein, and nucleic acid gel electrophoresis. * Good command of Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and OneNote or related software.
