This position is governed by a local union contract.
The Equipment Operator position is responsible for activities related to the operation of a power plant which operates on a 24/7 schedule and is manned on a rotating shift basis. This position is responsible for the safe operation of power plant equipment which includes areas of the boiler, turbine, water treatment, fuel feed system, and auxiliary equipment in a manner compliant to environmental regulations and reliability standards.
The safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of power plant equipment including boiler, turbine and auxiliary equipment.
Perform daily inspections and rounds of equipment.
Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
Perform equipment isolation and tagging.
Assist in troubleshooting operational problems.
Apply knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks.
Operate computers and printers.
Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from operating system.
Work without supervision while carrying out duties.
Perform preventive and minor maintenance of various plant equipment.
Meet Physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing and squatting.
Work with extended reach above head and in front of the body and lift 50 pounds and carry while walking distances up to 10 feet.
Have the ability to learn and qualify as a Multi-Skilled Operator (MSO).
Have the ability to qualify as Assistant Control and Control Operator positions.
High school diploma or GED equivalent
A minimum of 2 years of prior work experience in power generations operations and maintenance
Must have working knowledge of steam power plant system operations and basic power plant principles
Must reside within a reasonable distance from the facility in order to be available for call-outs or emergencies
Must receive a rating of "recommended" on the NRG Pre-Employment Skills Assessment
Must be able to work a 24/7 rotating shift
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must possess a demonstrated ability to learn.
Ability to perform multiple task or assignments at the same time.
Post-secondary education in the power generation field is desirable.
Ability to use a personal computer and associated software.
Ability to troubleshoot problems and make sound decisions to resolve them based on skill area knowledge of plant operations and equipment.
Ability to work successfully in a team environment to direct activities of others and provide job instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with management and co-workers, on equipment, plant, or system conditions.
Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculation.
Ability to operate computer systems to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data.
Ability to monitor, record, and analyze data available through the use of shift logs, instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices.
Ability to assist others in performance testing.
Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per NRG Tag Out/Lock Out procedure.
Ability to implement Plant Emergency Procedures as needed.
Ability to learn mechanical & electrical controls, equipment, and power plant equipment operation.
Ability to read, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals.
Good electrical and mechanical aptitude. Good problem-solving skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas, dusty areas and elevations in excess of 100 ft.
Ability to climb stairs.
Work in all temperatures and climate conditions.
Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
Performance of duties requires working rotating shifts and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week.
