Job Description

Reporting to the SC Business Director, Paper, the primary duty of the Plant Engineer is to drive continuous improvement of the maintenance departments in support of our Quality Management System and corporate objectives while insuring a safe working environment. The Plant Engineer will establish and enable a consolidated process improvement program designed to integrate the business processes for continuously improving performance using Lean initiatives as the change methodology. The position requires process improvement of safety and environmental performance, reducing energy requirements, incremental production increases, and product presentation improvement. The Plant Engineer will work with talented and successful people to guide and reinforce a team of self-managed and achievement-oriented maintenance personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure regional compliance with government and safety regulations and company safe working practices.

  • Plan and direct activities related to design, modification and repair of machinery, mechanical and hydraulic components of production equipment in a manufacturing environment for multiply sites.

  • Oversee the installation, repair, maintenance and operation of automated machinery and equipment.

  • Responsible for the repair and maintenance of the office and plant facilities.

  • Develop and implement procedures to manage maintenance inventories.

  • Work with site leadership planning, coordinating and prioritizing maintenance needs with production requirements.

  • Investigate reliability issues and perform root cause analysis on significant failures.

  • Participate as key member of management team in the implementation of lean manufacturing practices.

  • Ensure effective leadership, evaluate and develop core competencies.

  • Implement training for the maintenance department.

  • Lead the Maintenance staff in electrical, mechanical, and process maintenance.

  • Ensure maintenance activities are executed to improve reliability, safety and quality.

  • Work with production to develop technical skills in manufacturing.

  • Monitor, measure, and improve predictive and preventive maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime.

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on key performance metrics for site.

  • Forecast and operate within the maintenance and region-wide capital expense budget.

  • Responsible for specification and initial selection of plant related equipment to improve the effectiveness of operations.

  • Understand financial drivers in the form of budgets, cost, yields, operating plan, etc.

  • Schedule and manage maintenance operations to ensure maximum production for minimum cost.

  • Communicate with the SC Business Director, Plant Manager, and plant leadership sharing combined knowledge and information.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering

  • Minimum 5 years engineering experience including demonstrated leadership experience

  • Green Belt Certification, preferred

Other Requirements

  • Previous management experience, highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated understanding of maintenance productivity and budget metrics.

  • Strong troubleshooting ability including root cause corrective action skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working closely with leaders from production, purchasing, suppliers and others.

  • Computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office, SAP and other enterprise software for purchasing and maintenance management.

  • Automation/ Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC Controls) exposure.

  • Previous hands-on experience with heavy industrial plant maintenance including hydraulics, pumps, and electrical.

  • Experience with ISO 9001 implementation and compliance.

  • Proficient in the use of Lean Six Sigma principles.

  • Knowledge of OSHA and formal safety programs.

  • Strong and proven management and leadership skills required.

  • Proven project management skills and experience.

  • Good organizational skills, analytical ability, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Planning and problem-solving ability.

  • Must be flexible, innovative, and comfortable in setting own priorities.

  • Ability to bend, reach, pull
