Basic Qualifications

Associate's degree in related discipline or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Planner/Ship Checker. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • The candidate must have extensive knowledge of shipboard structural, mechanical, piping and electrical systems and understand Navy shipboard compartmentation lay-out.

  • The candidate must have the ability to read, understand and validate a Work Notification and to determine the scope of work contained within that Work Notification.

  • The candidate must be familiar with Standard Drawing Indexes, Navy Standard Drawings, blueprints, system diagrams, Navy acronyms, and other technical publications and references.

  • The candidate must have the ability to conduct research and determine the correct reference and/or drawing required for the scope of work identified in the Work Notification.

  • The candidate must have extensive experience with NMD-R

  • The candidate must have extensive knowledge

  • The candidate must also have physical ability to climb ladders, transit decks and perform work onboard Naval Vessels.

  • Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements

  • Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards

  • Responsible for defining and determining best practice process and procedures for collected data to be transposed to professional writing product

Proactively informs the technical documentation lead of assignment status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule, process, and quality through informal meetings, and emailed status reports to keep the technical documentation lead informedKNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Considerable written communication skills and the ability to tailor communication to target audience

Considerable verbal communication, listening and writing skills

Considerable ability to research highly technical information and interpret data

Develops solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity

Experience with editing and production tools

Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action Considerable ability to build productive internal/external working relationships

Frequently interacts with internal company and external contacts

Works under only very general supervision

Interacts with all levels of internal and external organizations from senior management down to lower level employees. Supervises 7 subordinates directly and 55 indirectly. Maintains internal contact with all departments and external contact with customers and subcontractors. Reports to the General Manager of Repair. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES * Directs all activities within assigned area. * Interfaces with and coordinates production support departments. * Manage trade/subcontractors priorities and sequencing. * Develop repair availability execution strategies and schedules. * Develops and implements company and departmental procedures and policies. * Ensures NASSCO's safety, environmental and emergency procedures are followed. * Ensures housekeeping and material control procedures are maintained. * Expedites internal/external problem resolution to support the Repair Department's objectives. * Oversees and maintains a continuous improvement program in the areas of quality, cycle time reduction and producibility. * Manages work status including EAC's, costs, schedule compliance, manning levels and supervisory assignments. * When required develops recovery plans for cost and schedule deficiencies. * Conducts and attends management and production meetings. * Ensures personnel development and best usage of resources (personnel and facilities). * Ensures that the corporate objectives are communicated and implemented. * Participates in the development of company strategies which support the most cost effective and schedule constrained objectives for new vessels. * Plans future needs relating to workload, staffing, manning and repair facilities and assets, planning process improvements. * Provides leadership in support of NASSCO's MVGP. * Maintain and develop external relationships with our customer. * Performs other duties and responsibilities as required. SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field with a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience and five (5) years supervisory experience, or equivalent combinations of education and /or experience. Must have experience developing business goals and creating a strategic plan. Familiarity with government contracts and the military is necessary. Familiarity with commercial marketing a plus. In addition, requires: * Extensive experience in ship repair process. * In-depth knowledge of repair procedures, machinery, production, planning and estimating methods. * Good knowledge of NASSCO's policies and procedures. * Good knowledge of contract and estimating procedures. * Proven team-building skills. * Good knowledge of Safety, Housekeeping and Environmental Policies. * Good verbal and written communication skills. * Must be able to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as job accomplishments require PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical and Environmental safety requirements: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects or controls and to talk and hear the noise level in this environment is usually moderate. Must be able to climb vertical ladders, work at heights and around moving machinery.
