Pilot Plant Technician

Job Description


This position is responsible for assisting with organizing and performing pilot plant trials and associated support work under general supervision. This is a skill/knowledge developmental position for a pilot plant technician position.

1.Under supervision organize and prepare formulations, as per NesTMS requirements, and perform pilot plant trials in a safe and efficient manner
2.Set-up, operate and clean food-processing equipment with supervision
3.Maintain equipment in good sanitary and working condition
4.Maintain a safe, clean and sanitary work area
5.Organize and record data as outlined in the pilot plant request
6.Prepare summaries of trial results with recommendations for processing/product improvements based on observations
7.Working skills/knowledge of equipment and unit operations in the pilot plant
8.Adhere to all facility policies concerning safety, security, Good Laboratory and Good Manufacturing Practices (GLP & GMP)
9.Travel as required for training
10. Practice safety in the work area
11. Provide hands on support to Project Leaders, Pilot Plant Team Members and others in pilot plant with preparation, execution, follow up, review and process improvement with trial work.


  • Light mechanical repair/plumbing as required

  • Interact with project teams and participate in project discussions as required

  • Actively participate in cross-training as needed as well as learning new skills required due to technology advances

JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):

  • High School Diploma (or GED)

  • Prefer a working knowledge of pet food/food processing equipment and operations

  • Ability to become a licensed fork lift operator

  • Good mechanical skills or aptitude

  • Good teamwork, interpersonal, communication, organization, math and writing skills

  • Computer literacy

MS with minimum of five year's relevant experience. BS with minimum of seven year's relevant experience. Conducts research and contributes to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, or trade secrets; * Designs, conducts and interprets complex experiments. Develops and implements research and/or technology-driven proposals. Primary author for scientific reports. Effectively communicates research findings; * May assume project leadership and/or supervisory functions. Applies defined scientific principles to solve complex scientific problems. Exploits new developments from the scientific literature to aid in problem solving; * Demonstrates a sustained high level of technical skill and achievement. Must keep abreast of new science and technological developments and exploit them to continuously improve functional area capabilities; * Fosters team based approach to research. Interacts with colleagues in other functions and other departments to solve problems; * Research experience in assay development and system improvement related to improve plant performance and understand the biological mechanisms of plant and environment interaction; * Experience working with crops such as corn and soybean in laboratory, GH and field settings. * Experience with patent search and writing patent applications.
