Solutia, Inc., a leading manufacturer of film interlayer products, has immediate opening for a Pilot Plant Technician at its Springfield, MA location. A suitable candidate for this position would be very adaptable in capable of performing a wide variety of polymer processing operations such as extrusion, lamination, lab analysis and related work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work safely with others in a team and promote a safe work environment.

  • Work closely in a team of technicians who operate a wide variety of polymer processing operations.

  • Reliably execute regular tasks including raw materials transfer, extrusion line setup, startup and control, sheeting line adjustment, sheet handling, instrumentation setup and calibration, sampling and sample analysis, data collection, other extrusion related duties and run/test report writing

  • Participate in mechanical installation and breakdown of various setups for routine lab processes.

  • Quality Control testing of extruded sheet including data collection and data entry,

  • Operation of SDC and SAP for raw materials and finished goods, equipment file organization, SAP data collection for maintenance.

  • Proper recognition, record keeping and disposal techniques in lab quantity amounts for chemical hazardous wastes.

  • Other offline responsibilities will be assigned on an as needed basis


  • Associates Degree in a Technical Field or Technical Diploma required

  • College level course work in math, engineering, or mechanical/electrical trade school is preferred.

  • Prior hands-on experience with extruder setup including heaters, thermocouples and instrumentation is preferred.

  • Familiarity with extrusion and process control systems (digital control systems; DCS) is preferred

  • Familiarity with Quality systems, for example ISO, is preferred

  • Must to be able to read, understand, and follow process flow diagrams, operating procedures, run plan instruction, process control flow charts and quality control lab procedures.

  • Must be able to review mechanical drawings including piping and instrumentation, conduct equipment and safety reviews and support quality improvement projects.

  • Ability to work with machinery in a pilot plant atmosphere.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Flexibility to work overtime and/or second shift as needed to meet project timing and requirements is desirable

  • Must be able to lift materials up to 40 lbs and be on one's feet for eight-hour periods.

  • Strong commitment to task and ability to organize, prioritize, and execute assignments in a high activity environment

  • Clear and effective written and oral communication

  • Demonstrated computer experience with standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Education and Experience: * Bachelor of Science in metallurgy, material science, or mechanical engineering -- advanced degree preferred * Minimum 6-8 years of hands-on, manufacturing/metals industry experience * Must possess and demonstrate superior skills in material structural analysis and their relations to mechanical properties * Experience in failure analysis and prevention Competencies and Skills: * Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (basic verbal instructions, simple written memos and instructions) * Working knowledge of atmospheric, vacuum, and salt methods of heat treatment * Experience with forging, metal finishing, MIM, PM, castings, and injection molding * A genuine belief in continuous improvement and disciplined processes, with a willingness to analyze, challenge and change processes, if needed, to create a more efficient environment and culture or related discipline * Possess the ability to influence individuals and groups at all levels of our organization with strong interpersonal skills * Ability to foster change, promote and implement improvement -- lead by example * Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, statistical tools and related software Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Manage daily activities and tasks of Metallurgy lab. * Analyze macro and microstructures of both ferrous and nonferrous materials * Perform first article metallurgical inspections on all new product components * Work with all internal business units as well as external suppliers, providing in-depth technical expertise * Develop new or improve upon existing metallurgical processes * Provide and manage failure analysis utilizing internal equipment or by seeking external lab assistance * Monitor and provide problem solving assistance to the heat treat, forging, and finishing departments * Work closely with product engineering with new designs and materials * Write technical reports for all levels of the organizational management structure * Provide incoming level inspections for all raw material or related parts * Assure metallurgical and operating processes are in control and capable of meeting the needs of internal and external clients * Maintain up to date knowledge of best industry practices in metallurgy, manufacturing, and quality * Perform all forms of NDT * Develop new materials and coatings for future products * Requires up to 5% travel NOTE: This list presents only the principal duties of the position and is not intended to be comprehensive.
