Duties

Summary

This position would be located within Mental Health Service and would provide consultative service as a primary care physician to the psychiatric inpatient services, particularly the inpatient geriatric psychiatry service. Another important role of this position is to provide support and consultation to medical APRNs in the outpatient substance use program and in the residential programs.
Responsibilities

In addition, services as a primary care physician would be provided to populations of veterans who may not regularly be seeking primary care services, such as those served by our Mental Health Intensive Case Management team.This is a group of veterans who have been diagnosed with a severe chronic mental illness. This is an ideal position for a primary care physician with an interest in mental illness and with an appreciation for a diverse array of opportunities.
Provide primary medical care for an identified and enrolled panel of patients with our seriously mentally ill population in conjunction with the Mental Health Treatment Team .
Provide medical support to our psychiatric inpatient and domiciliary services including medical detoxification services.
Provide services as the physician collaborator to medical Advanced Practice Nurses.
Medical Care could include annual exams, illness intervention, specialty consultation/referral, prescribing medication, ordering labs, radiology procedures and various therapies to maximize patient wellness.
Responsible for all performance measures/monitors involving primary care and adherence to all clinical policies and procedures outlined in facility Medical Center Memorandums, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and National directives.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00a m-4:30 pm; work schedule may vary depending on needs of the service. Occasional extended hours.

Total salary will include Base component and Market Pay. Final salary to be determined by a local physician pay panel. Physicians are eligible for annual performance pay and incentive awards.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desired. If selected for this position, per VHA Directive 1177, you must possess current BCLS certification as you will provide direct clinical care to patients in this position.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Incumbents for this position may apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) ONLY IF ALL of the following conditions are met:
EDRP funds are available for a Full Time Appointment .
All eligibility factors, as shown in VHA Handbook 1021.01. are met.
Incumbent is within the first 6 months of permanent appointment or conversion to a permanent appointment. Submitting incomplete application packages or lack of EDRP funds does NOT extend the 6 month period.
A complete EDRP application package must be submitted to the EDRP Coordinator within 4 months of permanent appointment or conversion to a permanent appointment.

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities CAVHS serves approximately 60,000 Veterans through our primary care, mental health and specialty services. Points of care include two VA Medical Centers (Little Rock and North Little Rock) and eight community based outpatient clinics around the state. Total salary will include base component and market pay. Final salary will be determined by local Physician Pay Panel. Physicians are also eligible for annual performance pay and incentive awards.
