Summary

Within the context of serving as a member of the VA Caribbean Healthcare System at the Mayaguez Outpatient Clinic (MOPC) this psychiatrist is accountable to the MOPC/Arecibo Clinic Program Manager and Chief of Psychiatry Service or designee in the management of responsibilities in the provision of psychiatric care and the participation in educational and research activities of the Psychiatry Service within the MOPC of VA Caribbean Healthcare System.
Responsibilities

Provides cross coverage in outpatient and inpatient areas.
As a provider of psychiatric care as part of an interdisciplinary team provides examination and treatment and coordination of medical care with the Family Physician, Internist, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and Nurse Practitioner, coordinates consultations, referral of patients, operation of quality assurance and utilization programs including peer reviews, open and closed medical record reviews and utilization reviews.
Using computerized medical record system enters progress notes, orders, and medical record review and completion of such records in a complete and timely manner.
Provides clinical assessment/evaluation of veterans with difficult and complex mental health issues, selecting them from a variety of resources and clinical approaches including non-direct and cognitive behavior therapy, behavior modification, insight oriented methods, family therapy, relaxation training, medication management, etc.
Assures every mental health patient has an assigned Mental Health Treatment Coordinator, either by becoming it or by assuring assignment within the interdisciplinary team.
Participates in research projects as assigned.
Coordinates preventive health care needs.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Elements:
Graduate from an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited Psychiatry Residency Program.
Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology - General Psychiatry certification. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
The position will require walking, standing or sitting for periods of up to 10 to 12 hours each day.

In addition, the incumbent will need to bend, lift and turn. Under urgent or emergency situations the incumbent will need to run, sprint or run up or down stairs.
