Job Summary

Responsible for assisting providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. Assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes. Also performs general administrative duties in accordance with TJC, CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA and government standards, as well as company policies and procedures. All patient care is under the direction of a physician and within the scope of a medical assistant.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required;andGraduation from a Medical Assistant program or

  • Eligible for certification by either the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or

  • The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or

  • National Health career Association (NHA) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) required

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) ora Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) orCertified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or

  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) required within 12 months of hire; and Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification within 30 days of hire

  • Maintains required credentials

Experience / Knowledge /

Skills:
  • Six (6) months of medical assistant experience required; or Completion of a medical assistant externship required

  • Demonstrates ability to maintain good communications; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, families, and the public

  • Working knowledge of ICD9/10 and CPT coding and insurance procedures

  • Works primarily a pre-determined schedule but occasional requirements to work evenings or weekends depending on patient care needs may exist; ability to float to other clinic practices as needed is an expectation

Principal Accountabilities

  • Under the overall supervision of the Practice Manager, direct clinical supervision of the physician and within established policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following functions:

  • Delivers appropriate care to patients, at a proficient level; is cross-trained to competently care for patients in a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) setting.

  • Reviews charts prior to patients' scheduled appointment to assure that all requested lab work and diagnostic procedures have been completed and that reports have been returned and are accessible to the provider.

  • Reviews, obtains, and records patient vital signs, temperature, pulse, height, weight and blood pressure and reason for visit and uses the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) appropriately and follows guidelines.

  • Cross trains to perform patient access tasks, including: take messages and assist providers with return phone calls to patients and pharmacies appropriately.

  • Direct patients to examination rooms; assists in preparing patients for examination. Notifies provider of patient's arrival and readiness for their examination.

  • Assists providers with patient examinations and procedures, including (but not limited to) surgical procedures, GYN exams, diagnostic studies, and treatments.

  • Operates and monitors functioning of equipment; hands instruments to the provider.

  • Conducts hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; records results in chart.

  • Administers medications as directed using seven rights. Performs venipuncture, collects urine specimens, and complete lab tests procedures according to policies and procedures. Handles all specimens using Universal Precautions.

  • Recognizes emergency situations, seeks assistance and intervenes appropriately.

  • Monitors patient during and following procedures; looks for reactions and other visible complications; reacts to emergency situations; notifies the appropriate person in the event of a medical emergency.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

The ideal candidate must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association, preferably with at least one year of experience. The primary purpose of the Physician Assistant – Research position is to function in an expanded role, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment, evaluation, management, and monitoring of patients participating in research protocols. Function: Promotes and maintains the health of the patient and provides independent and advanced clinical and operational management of research protocols. Scope: Impacts direct patient care according to the nurse practice act of the State of Texas and MD Anderson Cancer Center, impact research protocols and patients in designated protocols. Key Functions PATIENT CARE/EDUCATION: 1. Provides quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs. Assesses health status by performing the medical history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment. Monitors laboratory, clinical radiographic and procedural data for daily rounds. Must visually evaluate data and prepare written information. Reviews the findings of the history and physical, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data, plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management as outlined in collaboration with the attending physician. 2. Prevents, minimizes and manages symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physician and other allied personnel. Evaluates health care provided and modifies care as needed (under the supervision of a physician if medical acts are required). Provides psychological support to patients and families. Facilitates communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team and coordinates services related to patient care. Schedules consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures, future appointments for patients in coordination with the attending physician. 3. Identifies and provides patient and family educational needs regarding treatment management, evaluation and follow-up on clinical trials and research protocols through talking with patients and families person to person and by telephone and synthesizing information provided. Must be able to visually observe and assess patients by listening to them and/or their families describe their health condition. Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships, including patient, physician, co-workers and subordinates. 4. Administers investigations and non-investigational medications, as indicated, following accepted professional and institutional procedures/guidelines. Collects and properly identifies special laboratory specimens as required by protocol by drawing blood and collecting specimens provided by patients, following accepted nursing and laboratory procedures/guidelines. DATA COLLECTION: 1. Assesses patients for protocol eligibility in inpatient, outpatient and community settings through personal interviews with patients. Requires mobility to all patient care settings both inpatient and outpatient. Requires talking on the phone with patients in their home communities, taking hand-written notes, and retrieving and visually reading patient's medical record or retrieving laboratory, x-ray, etc., reports on computer. 2. Coordinates, evaluates and follows patient's participation in clinical trials, research protocols, cancer prevention studies and high risk screening programs through personal interviews by mobility to inpatient hospital rooms and clinic exam rooms and on the telephone with patients and families and by retrieval and visual review of medical records daily. 3. Schedules tests required throughout the treatment episode by manually completing scheduling request forms by mobility to clinic where patient is seen and writing requests. 4. Obtains pharmacology and other required laboratory specimens for research and study purposes by drawing blood (which requires maintaining controlled, steady arm and hand posture) following accepted institutional procedures or collecting specimens provided by patient directly and/or via other sources, e.g., Operating Room, etc. 5. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team individually and in group meetings in monitoring and evaluating patient and family response to the treatment protocol or research study by providing verbal and written or computerized reports. 6. Assists primary investigator in collection and evaluation of data collected from all research endeavors by retrieving and visually reading data from medical record in clinic, office or Medical Records and entering via keyboard into computers in office or transcribing data by and onto Case Report forms. 7. Evaluates response to treatment, grading toxicities and adverse treatment reactions through personal interviews by mobility to inpatient room or clinic exam room from office to take with patient, by visually monitoring the medical record and or by talking with patient and or family members and local physicians on the telephone. 8. Audits related to assigned studies consistently reflect accuracy and integrity. Other Functions PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION: 1.
