Broughton Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital serving the western region of North Carolina, is recruiting for two (2) full-time Physician Extenders. Our 24-hour in-patient facility serves adult, geriatric, adolescent, and deaf patients. The professional in this position will provide primary health care for patients, gather patient medical history, conduct patient evaluations, make medical diagnoses, order therapy, prescribe medical treatment, and prescribe medications. Practitioners in this role have received specialized training and work is performed in collaboration with a Physician. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Performing medical histories and physical examinations of patients upon admission;
Ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies such as lab work, x-rays, and EKGs;
Performing annual physicals;
Administering minor surgical care;
Prescribing medications, when needed;
Counselling patients on nutrition, diet, and weight control;
Diagnosing, treating, and monitoring acute and chronic health problems such as infections, minor injuries, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, etc. to include collaborating and coordinating care with other disciplines and providers;
Coordinating treatment plan changes in collaboration with other members of the Treatment Team and performing related duties as required;
Participating in on-call as assigned by the duty roster; and
•Relating to patients with empathy and caring and having the ability to work with colleagues and other staff members.
This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
The normal schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm; however, flexibility is required to meet the needs of the hospital. Other schedules will be considered based on hospital need.

Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board and holding a Psychiatry Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) and one year of experience
OR
Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board holding the Psychiatric - Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification and one year of experience.
