General Summary:

The Physician Assistant supporting the MarinHealth Vascular Surgery division will primarily work in an outpatient setting, with occasional inpatient support based on practice requirements. Initially, first-assisting in the operating room is not expected but may be included in the future. Our offices are located in Greenbrae, Novato, Santa Rosa, and Sonoma, and clinic assignments will cover at least two of these locations. The Physician Assistant will collaborate with multiple attending physicians and fellow physician assistants, with opportunities for the role to expand as the program grows.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

General Clinical Duties:

  • Perform clinical assessments and management services independently or in a shared visit model on new and established Vascular Surgery patients, including history and complete vascular physical exam, prescription writing and refills, referrals, etc.

  • Perform wound care, utilizing best available products and therapies

  • Perform minor procedures including sclerotherapy, removal of tunneled catheters and wound debridements

  • Coordinate perioperative patient care including:

o Perform pre-operative history and physical examinations.

o Provide patient education.

o Initiate pre-and-post-operative orders (subject to authorization/co-signature of responsible physician).

o Arrange follow-up studies and appointments

o Remove sutures, staples, and drains; change dressings and perform appropriate wound assessment; arrange subsequent care (ie. Home health services and DME, PT, etc)

o Assess patients based on standardized protocols.

  • Participate in clinical research projects and/or provide staff education

  • Maintain vascular databases (VQI and any other that may be created)

  • Manage prophylaxis, post-operative and pain medication management.

  • Respond to My Chart and In-Basket inquiries and patient medical advice calls in a timely manner, no later than 24 hours.

  • Evaluate, assess and document a plan of treatment per patient's presentation or modify an established plan of care under the collaboration/supervision of an attending physician.

  • Round daily on service inpatients, which includes communicating and coordinating with clinical care team, patients and their families.

  • Order, interpret and act upon tests, procedures, and radiographic studies. Monitor or assist with scheduling of tests by patients.

  • Provide warfarin management guidance, refills and orders as needed (ie. coumadin clinic)

  • Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the practice.

  • Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner.

  • Initiate inpatient and outpatient consultations/referrals to other services.

  • Confer with attending physician as needed, when patient requests it, or if the patient's problem is beyond his/her clinical comfort and experience.

  • Provide both initial and ongoing assessment and management of inpatient and emergency room consults when needed.

  • Document patient care activity appropriately in Apex and close all encounters within 48 hours.

  • Work and interface with vendors as may be needed for patient care

  • Perform other duties as set in the "Scope and Setting of Practice"

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, computer and interpersonal skills to interact effectively and professionally with a diverse clinician and patient population.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.

  • Completion of a surgical residency preferred

License/Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA)

  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain.

  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California as required by the clinical specialty.

  • Must be eligible for payer enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid.

Experience:

  • 2 - 5 years of PA experience preferred, but would consider motivated new grad.

  • Prior experience in wound care and/or minor office based procedures, like sclerotherapy, would be beneficial
