Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner Role Scope

Under the responsibility of the physician, the NursePractitioner is responsible for duties within their area of competence in thedirect care of inpatients. Advanced practitioners admit and round on inpatientsunder the supervision of a physician. Evaluate the status of any assignedinpatient or outpatient by complete history and physical exam. Orderappropriate lab tests, imaging studies, radiographic and other cardiac imagingstudies, interpret lab, electrocardiographic and imaging studies. Initiate andwrite appropriate orders for the care of assigned medical patients includingnursing care, nutrition, IV therapy, medications and dressing changes. Followstandard medical practices observed in the Department of Medicine, includingdelivery of patient care. Complete record keeping, observe strictconfidentiality, and attend continuing medical conferences and patient reviewsessions. Follow standard medical practices observed in the Department ofMedicine, including delivery of patient care.

  • Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant / Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of Connecticut

  • Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant or National Board Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

  • Board Certification as an acute care nurse practitioner required

  • Experience as a PA or APRN within critical care, intensive care, emergency medicine, or urgent care required

OrthopaedicServices TheConnecticut Orthopaedic Institute's Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team is agrowing department that covers in-patient joint reconstruction, spine,podiatry, and acute fracture care. PhysicianAssistant Summary OrthopaedicAPPs are responsible for various functions. This role will be specific to providing pre-op and post-op care to ourorthopaedic patients on the floor. Onoccasion this APP may be responsible for an admission or consult. APPs will work in collaboration with andunder the indirect supervision of orthopaedic physicians. Responsibilitieswill include: * Admittingpatients. Perform and document complete H&Ps. Entering appropriateinformation and orders into the EMR. * Orderingand obtaining necessary diagnostic tests including imaging studies andlaboratory tests. Following through on interpretation of results andcommunicating them with the team. * Performingpre-op and post-op examination of patients. Changing dressings and wound vacs if indicated. * Requestconsultations when indicated, obtain appropriate work-up, and follow through onrecommendations. * Participatein daily rounds and assist with implementing management plan in collaborationwith multidisciplinary team and attending physician(s). * Enter,review, and update orders in the EMR to include: PT, OT, Speech, IV therapy,medications, restraints, patient care, and discharge orders. * Addressconcerns from patients, families, or other members of the multidisciplinaryteam. * Documentpatient encounters into the EMR including, but not limited to: admissions,progress, event, procedure, or discharge notes. * Performprocedures as credentialed. Shift Thisfull-time APP will work five 8-hour shifts (Monday through Friday) totaling 40hrs/wk. REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program or an ANCC accredited Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Program License and Certification Licensure for Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Connecticut Certification from the NCCPA or ANCC. BLS and ACLS required. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE 2 years working as a surgical APP 2 years working as an in-patient medicine APP Orthopaedic Nurse Certified KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions as well as effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use). Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology, the surgical procedures commonly performed, and the supplies and equipment used in orthopaedics. Knowledgeable in practices involved in patient care as it relates to different disciplines and disease states. Knowledge of medications and their reactions and interactions; counseling skills; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to work independently; ability to work under pressure. PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING Superior problem solving and/or decision making skills. Ability to make independent decisions.
