The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS), is seeking a full time Physician Assistant to work at the Gallup Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Gallup, New Mexico.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performing new patient and follow up medical evaluations to include history, physical examination, and the ordering of appropriate EKG, X-ray, MRI, CT scans, and other necessary laboratory studies/diagnostic procedures such as EMG.
Performing inpatient consultations, under the supervision of the Pain Medicine attending physicians, for patients requiring chronic pain evaluation while admitted to the hospital.
Drawing blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable procedures including arterial blood gases.
Ordering medications (including intravenous fluids, electrolytes, water soluble vitamins, narcotic and nonnarcotic analgetics) or devices to include TENS units and other necessary prosthetic devices which have been previously ordered as a part of a regimen for previously established diagnoses.
Ordering appropriate consultation to other services such as Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Therapy, and Psychiatry.
Order routine prosthetic devices as needed. Excluded would be special items such as electric beds, treadmills, electric wheelchairs, etc.
Ordering prescriptions used in radiographic and diagnostic procedures.
Ordering controlled substance prescriptions and/be when in possession of DEA number to include Schedules II, III, IV and V.
Ordering over the counter prescriptions.
Performing Post procedure/ surgical evaluations and follow up phone calls on patients having undergone interventional pain management procedures. This will include but is not limited to wound checks, suture and staple removal.
Performing intradermal skin testing for TB, routine immunizations, and giving injections of perenteral medications.
Initiating consultations to specialty services.
Counseling patients and families on preventive care, medical problems, and the use of prescribed drugs, treatments and interventional pain management procedures.
Initiating incident reports for reportable injuries.
Preparing and recording interim and final summaries for review, approval, and signature of physician.
The Physician Assistant will also be involved in the triage of chronic pain patients when phone calls are placed to the clinic. The Physician Assistant will notify the Pain Medicine Attending of any emergent situations.

Education or Training. The candidate must meet the following: (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Certification. (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years.
English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Full Grade Experience / Education. None beyond the basic requirements above.
Intermediate Grade Experience / Education. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, PA candidates must have:
1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Senior Grade Experience / Education. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, PA candidates must have: 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or
Chief Grade Experience / Education. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following:
After 5 years of professional practice as a PA, candidates must able to demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, leadership ability, and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy. Further, the PA candidate for Chief Grade will have demonstrated all the requirements of one or more of the following categories: Management/Administrative, Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development and Research.
The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where an applicant has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken a combination of difficult or complex assignments in several clinical, administrative, research and educational arenas which required a high degree of competence.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13 (Chief Grade). The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-09 to GS-13.
