Summary

As a Physical Therapy Assistant, you will provide physical therapy services within the Lawton Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) under the oversight of the Neurology/ Rehabilitation Service at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center.
Responsibilities

A licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works under direct supervision in an outpatient setting supervised by one or more Physical Therapists (PT). Independently provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical dysfunction. Provides physical therapy services within the Lawton Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) with oversight of the Neurology/ Rehabilitation Service at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center.

Services will be provided for Outpatient veterans with medical, neurological, post-operative orthopedic needs, including Durable Medical Equipment. Specialty Clinics such as Amputee, SCI or Wound Care may provide guidance for providing treatment for outpatient Veterans. Acts as coordinator of an outpatient spine specialty program, physical therapist student education clinical coordinator, telehealth educational program or as an outpatient specialty Total Joint Pathway program.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
English Language Proficiency. PTAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policies.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in an outpatient setting.
Ability to follow the Physical Therapist Plan of Care and consult with onsite Physical Therapist as needed.
Standard wound care knowledge is needed.
Ability to work independently without support staff is critical.
Communication skills both verbally and in writing with patients, family members and colleagues.
Ability to organize, assist in department organization, be flexible, and multitask.
Knowledge of infection control procedures.
Basic computer skills. Grade Determinations: GS-8
Experience. Completion of 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced knowledge of treatment techniques in order to assess changes in physical, mental, and/or medical status.
Advanced knowledge of physical therapy data collection and assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluations and interventions.

*Skill to manage and/or maintain responsibility for a specialty program.

*Ability to lead a group of employees and communicate information regarding work assignments and scheduling.

*Ability to instruct students and manage a trainee program for PTA students. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G23, Physical Therapy Assistant Qualification Standard.

Physical Requirements:
Frequent lifting up to 35 pounds with frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, overhead reaching and getting up and down from the floor may be required during the performance of this therapy position. Assistance should be obtained when lifting greater than 35 pounds.
