WHAT WE OFFER

  • General Salary Increases
  • Increases of 3.5% effective December 22, 2024.
  • New Hire Incentives
  • New hires may be eligible for a one-time New Hire Incentive up to 10% of the current annual base (Subject to the applicable section of the SEIU 721 MOA 2022- 2025, Amendment #6 Secs. 3801).
  • Educational Incentive
  • An educational incentive of 5% for completion of a graduate's degree which is not required.
  • Bilingual Incentive
  • Proficiency levels by exam are $.69 per hour (Level I), $1.00 per hour (Level II), or $1.32per hour (Level III).
  • Certification Pay
  • Incumbents in the Physical Therapist and Sr. Physical therapist classification are eligible for certification pay at a rate of $0.80 per hour based on their scheduled work week hours and not to exceed the scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification possessed up to a maximum of three (3) certifications.
  • Vacation Accrual
  • New regular, full-time employees shall accrue approximately 14 days of vacation a year for the first 10,400 hours or 5 years of service; vacation accruals increase at 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 20 years of service topping out at 26 days a year and 400 hours of vacation hours banked.
  • Vacation Redemption
  • After 14,560 hours of continuous service an employee may elected to "cash in" or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the same year after using 80 hours of vacation in the preceding 12 months.
  • Sick Leave
  • Full time regular employees accrue 3.08 hours of sick leave per pay period with an advance at hire of 40.04 hours which will be balanced at the completion of 13 bi-weekly pay periods.
  • Deferred Compensation
  • Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
  • Health Plans
  • Full time employees are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans: Tier one for employee only is $502 per biweekly pay period, tier two for employee plus one is $730 per biweekly pay period and tier three for employee plus family is $905 per biweekly pay period.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts- Choice of participation in the Flexible Spending Accounts which increase spending power through reimbursement of pre-tax dollars for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.

  • Pension Plan- Both the County and employees contribute to the County's Retirement Plan and to Social Security. If eligible, reciprocity may be established with other public retirement systems, such as PERS.

  • Holidays- 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

THE POSITION

This vacancy within the California Children's Services specifically in the Medical Therapy Program. The mission of the California Children's Services (CCS) is to help children under the age of 21 who have special medical needs such as: chronic medical conditions like cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, cerebral palsy, heart disease, cancer; traumatic injuries; and infectious diseases that cause major medical problems. The Medical Therapy Program (MTP) is a special program within CCS that provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and Medical Therapy Conference services to CCS MTP eligible children who have disabling conditions, generally due to neurological or musculoskeletal disorders, such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disease, musculoskeletal diseases, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida, brachial plexus injury and acquired injury and illnesses such as burns and traumatic brain injuries.

Under general supervision, the Physical Therapist (PT) assists in the habilitation and rehabilitation of patients by providing services to patients with impairments, functional limitations, disability, or change in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes.

Under direction, Senior Physical Therapist (Sr PT) evaluates referred patients; plans, coordinates resources, and administers physical therapy treatment programs; plans and supervises the clinical skills of staff physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, aides, volunteers and students.

APPROXIMATE SALARY:

Physical Therapist: $37.37 - $52.25 Hourly

Senior Physical Therapist: $40.99 - $60.38 Hourly

The Physical Therapist and Senior Physical Therapist are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs evaluation and ongoing assessment of Medical Therapy Program (MPT) eligible patients from birth to age 21 to determine physical and functional status.

  • Completes evaluates, makes recommendation(s) and provides justification(s) for therapy services which are submitted to the case management physician for approval

  • Initiates and maintains records of patient's status and progress.

  • Establishes realistic functional goals upon receipt of the signed physician prescription based on the therapist's evaluation, appropriate precautions, works in collaboration with the patient, family, support personnel, and physician directing care to develop goals and treatment plan.

  • Performs tests within the scope of physical therapy.

  • Plans general and specific therapeutic exercises and develops customized home exercise/activity programs.

  • Selects, applies, and modifies, one or more therapeutic interventions, as needed.

  • Provides patient and family education to assist in the achievement of functional goals.

  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, equipment vendors, social workers, nutritionists, patients, and families to manage the rehabilitation program and specialize equipment needs of each patient.

  • Conducts home visits as indicated to evaluate durable medical equipment needs that will be utilized in the home.

  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement.

  • Attends staff meetings, assigned clinics, and rounds as directed.

  • Obtains invoices and/or quotes for equipment in collaboration with providers(s)

In addition to the above listed duties, the Senior Physical Therapist level may also perform the following:

  • Supervises the clinical skills of staff therapists.

  • Supervises assistants, aides, students, volunteers, and clerical staff in the absence of the supervisor.

  • Participates in improving organizational performance.

  • Provides in-service training.

  • Assists in identifying and prioritizing department needs and overall planning.

  • Coordinates physical therapy programs with patients/caregivers, other team members, and others involved in the care of assigned patients.

  • Participates in the maintenance of departmental equipment and ordering of supplies.

  • Under supervision, develops and implements department programs.

  • Participates in the Individual Education Process (IEP) and represents the CaliforniaChildren's Services Medical Therapy Program (CCS therapist).

  • Examines, evaluates, and designs treatment plans to meet the physical and functional needs of patients.

  • Confers with physicians on patient needs.

  • Maintains current and appropriate documentation.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Physical Therapist

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of physical therapy, or proof of equivalency.

AND

Possession of a current valid Physical Therapy license issued by the State of California which is a condition of continued employment.

Senior Physical Therapist

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of physical therapy or proof of equivalency

AND

Two (2) years of physical therapy experience OR successful completion of an internship program with the hiring department or an equivalent training program and one (1) year of experience as a PT.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession and maintenance of a California Physical Therapy license.

  • The physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Possession of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate by date of hire, which, once obtained, is a condition of continued employment.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver license.

  • Live scan fingerprinting clearance is required prior to appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of: individualized education plans pertinent to Medical Therapy Program (MTP) applicants.

Thorough (PT) to comprehensive (Sr PT) knowledge of: human anatomy and physiology; administering various types of physical therapy treatment utilizing manual therapy techniques, exercise, and use of equipment; departmental processes and procedures; care and maintenance of physical therapy equipment.

Working ability to: establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and co-workers; assess and develop effective patient outcomes and patient management; and communicate effectively orally and in written form.

At the Senior level:

Comprehensive knowledge of: sensory, social, and physical development of children and understanding of the unique differences and needs to children with long term physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and various neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders; unique differences and needs of the patients' caregivers; and the ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
