HelpDuties Summary

You will serve as a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA). You will provide treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical dysfunctions. You will administer and monitor therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by a Physical Therapist (PT) but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of a Physical Therapist.

Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out within the physical medicine area and includes various clinical, administrative, and educational tasks associated with the Geriatric and Rehabilitation Service.

Duties will include but will not be limited to the following:

a. Under the general direction of a PT, the PTA completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data (including medical history), assisting in development of a plan of care, while assessing patient's status and ascertaining patient's need for therapy services.

b. Develops treatment goals under the supervision of a PT.

c. Administers Patient Treatments.

d. Coordinates/Interfaces with Others.

e. Maintains Equipment and Work Areas.

f. Provides Administrative Support.

g. Provides Guidance/Supervision.

h. Complexity/Knowledge

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • -United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • -Education: Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
  • -English Language Proficiency: PTAs must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

  • -Licensure in Ky
  • -Pain clinic or similar experience with patients with chronic pain
  • -Inpatient and Outpatient experience

2.Ability to obtain subjective history.
3.Ability to interpret information gained through subjective history.
4.Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with the patient, the physical therapist, health care providers, and others.

Assignment

  • Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs. It is expected that they receive guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and require direct supervision by the treating physical therapist.

GS-5

Experience required

  • In addition to the basic requirements, 6 months of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1.Ability to assess changes in physical, mental, and/or medical status.
2.Knowledge of treatment techniques needed to assess changes in physical, mental, and/or medical status.
3.Ability to recognize individual and cultural differences and respond appropriately in all aspects of physical therapy services.

Assignment

  • Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs. It is expected that they receive guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and require direct supervision by the treating physical therapist.

GS-6

Experience required

  • In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1.Knowledge of evidence based physical therapy practice.
2.Knowledge of physical therapy data collection and ongoing assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluation and interventions.
3.Knowledge of basic biological and medical science to assess patient data; make a preliminary determination of their needs; develop treatment goals and objectives; and implement patient treatment plans.

Assignment

  • Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs receiving little to no guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and require general supervision by the treating physical therapist.

GS-7

Experience required

  • In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1.Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team.
2.Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews.
3.Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.

Assignment

  • Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs. This is the full performance level for the PTA. Assignments include: service as an active team member in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program such as geriatrics, amputee, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiac rehabilitation, aquatics, orthopedics, or wound care, etc.; prepare, provide, and supervise clinical training experiences for PTA students; and independently provide patient education to patients and their caregivers.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 to GS-07.

Physical Requirements:
Physical Therapy Assistant functional requirements: Heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); Moderate carrying (15-44 pounds); Pushing (up to 1 hour); Reaching above shoulders; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 6 hours); Standing (up to 6 hours); Crawling/Kneeling; Repeated bending (up to 2 hour); correctable near vision; and emotional stability. Environmental Factors: Solvents, Electrical energy, Slippery or uneven walking surfaces; Working around moving objects or vehicles; Working with hands in water; and Working closely with others.
