Job Description

Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding

of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness,

and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develop talents of students in physical

achievement; and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team

physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student's ability.

Essential Duties

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual,

dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum designated by AAHS and other appropriate learning activities.

  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative

  • regulations and procedures of AAHS.

  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced

physical education program.

  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.

  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division's basic instructional

  • philosophy and congruent with course and SOL standards; provides individualized and small group

  • instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in

the physical education areas.

  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure

the overall safety of students.

  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to

  • include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.

  • Maintains control of storage and use of school property.

  • Evaluates each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports.

  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.

  • Supervises students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.

  • Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.

  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

Other Duties

  • Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development

  • meetings and other professional activities.

  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTO, student clubs

  • and after-school activities.

  • Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and

activity/learning centers.

  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field and meet the ALSDE licensure eligibility requirements to teach physical education.

  • Must be eligible for, or in possession or an appropriate Alabama teaching license. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Qualities and Role of AAHS PE/Health Instructor:

Alabama Aerospace and Aviation High School (AAHS) is deeply committed to meeting the needs of all students. We are intentional about our culture and implementation. Our AAHS PE/Health Instructor will be a highly motivated energetic educator who is a visionary leader with a clear, concise understanding of the social/emotional needs of our students and an excellent command of their content and its implementation within the AAHS setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide rigorous and relevant instruction on pre-approved hands-on curriculum in the content area and general work-place readiness alongside Aviation/Aerospace industry professionals.

  • Integrate soft-skill instruction into competency-based content area activities:

  • Personal decision making

  • Social-Emotional Intelligence as it relates to Health/Wellness

  • Support students in industry relevant competitions, industry exploration activities.

  • Show evidence of project-based learning (e.g., competitions, capstone events, etc.)

  • Collaborate with core content teachers on common course planning, integration and alignment.

  • Collaborate with school-based staff (admin, counselor, etc.).

  • Attend all relevant professional development set by the AAHS district team in order to provide the best educational experience possible for students.

  • Examples include:

  • Quarterly industry-focused PD sessions.

  • Instructional PD sessions.

  • Summer Institute sessions.

  • New teacher supports

Qualifications of an AAHS Physical Education Instructor

Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Health/Exercise Science or other related fields from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum 2 years full-time experience in physical education/health or field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience with certification

  • Excellent planning, organization, written and verbal communication skills

  • High-level problem solving skills

  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Team and detail oriented
