Job Description

NREL's Cell and Module Performance (CMP) group is internationally recognized for providing the highest level of accredited, traceable calibrations for any and all types of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of PV measurement science. The successful candidate will work with senior CMP scientists and engineers to realize new measurement techniques and hardware. After initial training and orientation on I-V and QE test beds the candidate will focus on advancing the state of the art in PV measurements through design, construction, interfacing, and programming of new hardware, electronics, and software.

Basic Qualifications

Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science or related field OR

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science or related field and 2 or more years of experience .

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Strong track record of hands on design, construction, and programming of electrical instrumentation.

  • High level of skill and experience in LabView programming for data acquisition and hardware control.

  • Highly motivated, self-starting, eager to learn new skills, and comfortable working alone or as part of a project team.

  • Good understanding of current vs. voltage instrumentation

  • Strong analytical skills, detail oriented, strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Very good writing, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.

  • Creative, good judgment, clear sense of purpose and personal responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate-level understanding of semiconductor device physics

  • Relevant experience in PV device performance measurements

  • Demonstrated track record programming in Python for instrument control and data acquisition.

  • Good understanding of probability, statistics, and uncertainty analysis

Job Description The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The PV Reliability and Systems Performance Group within the Materials Science Center has an opening for a Researcher 3 working on novel cell and module design, performance, and reliability. This project is focused on the development of thin-film/silicon tandem modules and the reliability and performance of bifacial PERC cells in tandems. The position entails a combination of computational modeling and experimental work. . Basic Qualifications Relevant PhD in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics or related field . Or, relevant Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics or related field and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics or related field and 5 or more years of experience . . Additional Required Qualifications * Knowledge of photovoltaic device physics and module design * Familiarity with silicon cell surface passivation and degradation mechanisms * Creative problem solving skills and adaptability * Ability to work with commercial partners under NDA * Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to respond quickly to partner requests Preferred Qualifications Experience with cell and module characterization techniques including IV, EL, PL Experience with cell and module performance modeling, such as QUOKKA, PSPICE, PVMismatch Familiarity with bifacial module performance and design Experience with accelerated testing of modules and design of accelerated testing procedures Knowledge of reliability concepts including acceleration factors, degradation modes, and failure analysis failure Familiarity with DFMEA Prototype mini-module fabrication .
