Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Photo/Video Specialist produces, edits and manages photography and videography that helps the University tell its brand story, recruit students, engage alumni and community partners and maintain positive relations with all its stakeholders. These visual assets will enjoy broad viewership among a variety of audiences, across all Montclair State University digital platforms and channels and at high-profile events.

Working closely with colleagues in University Communications and Marketing and with partners across campus, and in a self-motivated capacity, the Photo/Video Specialist is responsible for all facets of production, including, but not limited to, planning, setting up, filming, processing, archiving, and tagging of materials. In addition to taking photos, the Photo/Video Specialist captures video imaging, edits video footage in post-production, and archives branded short-form and long-form videos.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Spends approximately 65% of the time in Photography, 25% in Video and 10% in asset tagging, archiving and management activities.

  • Provides photographic and video services to University Communications for official purposes and serves other University units as assigned by the Creative Director.

  • Collaborates with in-house professionals to create imagery that meets the University's marketing needs and aligns with the University's institutional brand.

  • Prepares materials in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Requisitions, stores, and safeguards all equipment issued by the University.

  • Edits, names, tags, and archives digital materials, while also curating and sourcing those images to ensure that requested needs are filled promptly and responsively.

  • Coordinates with University Communications leadership to maintain and execute a calendar to capture images that reflect the depth, breadth, and energy of the University's programs and activities.

  • Keeps up-to-date on photography and video trends and remains current in using emerging digital/web technologies.

  • Captures on-brand scenes that communicate the Montclair State message and voice.

  • Presents work to immediate supervisor, partners and leadership for approval.

  • Ensures quality and accuracy in photography and video produced for audiences.

  • Obtains model releases from all subjects, where required, and files those releases with Director of Creative Services

  • Backs up Staff Photographer and Videographer positions, and assists them as a crew member when needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university.

  • One year of experience producing professional-quality photos and videos.

  • Proficiency in using software to process photos and in digital editing video footage.

  • Ability to collaborate well with others.

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities, and hitting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • A valid motor vehicle license and ability to travel to subjects' locations on assignment as required.

  • Ability to lift, move and operate camera equipment, media backdrops, and other items required to fulfill work obligations.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include occasional evening and weekend work.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in in film, videography, photography, fine arts or a closely related discipline.

  • More than one year of experience as a photographer or videographer.

  • Advanced training, such as a master's degree or certifications, in filming, editing and other duties closely related to the position.

  • Experience using a digital asset management system or other methods of archiving materials.

  • Ability to process and upload videos to YouTube.
