Borderless Magazine is an award-winning nonprofit news outlet that is reimagining immigration journalism for a more just and equitable future. We report and publish stories in English and Spanish in our online publication, we work with immigrants and their allies to tell their own stories, and we train journalists to more ethically report on immigration issues.
We recently won the Next Challenge's "Future of Local Journalism" award for our community-centered reporting. Find out more at www.borderlessmag.org.
Borderless is seeking a Photojournalism Intern to join us as part of our Pathways program in the Fall.
This is an exciting opportunity for an early career photojournalist or photographer to learn from Borderless' award-winning team.
Interns will work closely with their supervisor and meet weekly to review outtakes and discuss opportunities for growth. They will leave the internship with an expanded portfolio of published work (both on the Borderless Magazine site and with partner publications). They will also have the opportunity to learn reporting, writing, and interviewing skills, should they desire.
Areas of Responsibility
Coordinating with sources and reporters to schedule and plan for photo sessions
Photographing 2-3 assignments per week
Reporting additional information to add to captions and stories
Culling, toning and captioning all images with a consistent style
Capturing video for social media to accompany story engagement
Participating in editorial planning meetings and working alongside the editorial team
Working on a long-form photo essay or story related to Chicago's immigrant community
Requirements
Candidates should:
Have a basic camera kit (one camera and 1-2 lenses) and a laptop with editing software (Adobe Lightroom, etc.)
Have a means to travel to assignments throughout the Chicago region, whether it's their own vehicle or public transportation
Our ideal candidate will:
Be eager to produce meaningful images to accompany our reporting on the environment, community and social justice issues impacting Midwestern immigrant communities
Have professional or student publication photo assignment experience
Have a strong ability to work both individually and collaboratively with the rest of the staff, communicate status updates, and make any requested changes in a timely manner
Have fluency in a language(s) in addition to English
Have a story related to the Chicago-area immigrant community in mind to work on
We know there are great candidates who may not fit this job description or have important skills we haven't considered. If that's you, don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
Location
The intern will be expected to work assignments throughout the Chicago area and attend weekly meetings at Borderless' office in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. Non-Chicago applicants will be considered if they can relocate to the Chicago area during the internship period.
Borderless' Values
People Centered: We approach our coworkers and the people we interview, train, and mentor with humility and an appreciation of their innate human dignity. We never deceive each other or the people who entrust us with their stories.
Community First: We are deeply connected to immigrant community members. We prioritize the expertise, desires and needs of immigrants and those who care about them.
Resilience: We see strength and power in each other and uplift one another in everything we do. We see suffering in the world, but find ways to take care of each other - and ourselves - as we serve our community.
Fearless: We bravely report the truth of our communities.
We are not beholden to political or financial interests. We hold ourselves and others accountable as we help build a more just future.
Equity: We strive to create spaces and opportunities for people who do not traditionally have power or a platform in the journalism industry, particularly BIPOC and immigrant community members.
How to Apply
