JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Work Experience: Previous related experience is preferred.

Required Licenses / Certifications: Current BLS certification within 60 days of hire. Certified phlebotomist, MA, CMA or LPN preferred.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Clerical skills, computer skills, venipuncture, arterial puncture and heel sticks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs phlebotomy ( ie, venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, arterial puncture, bleeding times. Identifies patients and properly labels specimens tubes and samples.

Determines priority of stat draws. Ensures the timely collection and transport of all patient specimens to the lab for testing. Updates, collates, and files admission/discharge/transfer, patient orders, and results for transfer to medical records.

Records daily temperatures as directed by manager. Performs EKG analysis on in-patients, out patients. Records reference lab send outs and other statistical reports as directed by the laboratory manager.

Daily restocking of all phlebotomy supplies. Orders general supplies from Central supply. Daily routine cleaning and maintaining of laboratory neatness.

Act as receptionist, greet patients, and answer all incoming telephone calls. Attend and stay current with all safety/fire/infection control training programs. Follow the hospital exposure control plan/bloodborne and airborne exposure plans.

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, staff, families, visitors and acts in a professional manner at all times. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department unit team. Promotes effective working relationships with employees of all other departments.

BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB Provide medical interpreting for our limited English proficient patients and their families to enhance patient care, staff interactions, and better outcomes. Greets all customers, internal and external, with openness that solicits customer concerns. Works to resolve customer complaints. Identify customer concerns, attempt to resolve issues or refer to appropriate party. Assist in any part of the medical journey that will increase patient satisfaction JOB REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education: High School Diploma and Current Medical Interpretive Qualification Certificate. Minimum Work Experience: Prior experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with advanced medical terminology (including vocabulary specific to common medical specialties) preferred. Required Licenses / Certifications: Minimum of 40 hours of approved Medical Interpreter Training and passing of qualifying oral and written exams with a minimum of Intermediate Mid Score on the ACTFL scale. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Fluency in English and Spanish, both oral and written. A minimum TOEFL iBT test score of 95 for those who speak English as a second language. Basic typing skills for patient documentation and preparation of schedules and customer relations reports. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Strong linguistic skills: * Understands variety of regional accents and linguistic styles and registers * Selects appropriate mode of interpretation for each situation * Interprets with highest degree of accuracy and completeness * Self-corrects, understands own linguistic limitations, seeks clarification and accepts correction * Picks up cues from encounter participants regarding level of understanding and/or need for clarification * Strong writing skills and understanding of translation process. Strong cultural awareness competencies: * Understands language as an expression of culture, recognizes the underlying assumptions of each party about medicine, the encounter, the illness etc.; uses this understanding to empower patient and provider to better understand each other * Intervenes as intercultural mediator when communication is compromised by culture-bound messages * Avoids generalizations and stereotyping * Uses culturally appropriate behavior and is able to choose appropriate time to clarify or interject by respecting the goals of the encounter * Is aware of own personal values, beliefs and cultural characteristics which may be a source of conflict or discomfort in certain situations, is able to acknowledge these and/or to withdraw from encounters when these may interfere with successful interpretation. Strong interpreting skills: * Explains role of the interpreter to patient and provider * Recognizes the complexity of the clinical encounter and added factor of linguistic barrier * Sets tone of the patient/provider encounter to manage spatial configuration and flow of communication to preserve accuracy and completeness, and to assess and address potential areas of discomfort for patient (age, gender of interpreter, no previous experience with interpreters) * Encourages and fosters direct communication between provider and patient * Maintains professional distance and integrity * Diffuses conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial * Clarifies instructions, follow up steps in a diplomatic, effective manner. Ethical competency: * Understands and abides by hospital policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non-discrimination and by interpreters code of ethics and standards of practice. Interpersonal and customer service skills: * Projects positive attitude about the department and the hospital, and offers services to ensure positive experience * Works as a team with colleagues and providers * Addresses concerns raised during or after an encounter by encouraging provider to make appropriate referral and/or assisting with making of appointment with right resource and booking interpreter as needed * Effectively communicates with staff from all hospital departments and off-campus clinics to schedule patient appointments, relay messages and reminders to patients, book follow-ups, and make seamless hand-offs for patients referred to other hospital clinics and/or specialists * Prepares written reports of interpretation services provided. * Translates documents as requested for all hospital departments. * Prepares and presents workforce diversity training at new employee orientation. * Presents a provider specific training on diversity and interpretive services to hospital residents. Schedules training and makes arrangements for payment of training through the Bureau of Rural Health and Primary Care. Maintains list of all employed qualified interpreters for dissemination to hospital leadership. * Works with hospital and clinic leadership to ensure policies are updated and accurate, touching on providing interpretive services meet all regulatory requirements for Joint Commission certification. Tracks all interpreters licensure and produces accurate lists of available interpreters to all BMH departments. Notifies clinic manager of any discrepancies. Tracks daily patients on a spreadsheet to discuss at bi-weekly meetings with clinic manager. Conducts timely and effective medical interpreting services or coordinates arrangements in your absence. Maintains current licensure and keeps updated on knowledge of bilingual interpretation. Represents the department as the point person for interpreting coordination of care.
