Performs phlebotomy for collection of blood specimens throughout the medical center. Maintains specimen collection component of the LIS. Performs patient registration functions for courier specimens.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements (if applicable):

  • High school graduate or GED required.

  • Phlebotomy certification (CPT) or health-related experience preferred. On-the-job training may be given.

  • Good interpersonal skills required.

  • Typing and basic computer skills required.

  • Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.

Job Functions
1.

Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as appropriate for age of patient.
2.

Demonstrates safe handling and proper collection techniques to maintain integrity and quality of specimens
3.

Demonstrates correct procedure for labeling, accessioning, and delivering specimens to the proper department.
4.

Responds promptly to phlebotomy requests for STATs, ASAPs, NOWs and outpatients, with a supportive and cooperative attitude.
5.

Greets and receives patients in a friendly manner, demonstrating sensitivity to patient's needs.
6.

Communicates information to appropriate areas, departments and individuals. Alerts appropriate staff concerning STAT orders.
7.

Educates patients and documents appropriately.
8.

Restocks phlebotomy trays and procurement areas after use and at end of shift.
9.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to operate hospital and laboratory computer information systems efficiently and effectively.
10.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills of computer downtime procedures.
11.

Participates in department PI activities.
12.

Provides back-up courier support when necessary.
13.

Keeps phlebotomy area clean, neat, and organized.
14.

Completes departmental training and competency exams on an ongoing basis.
15.

Performs other duties as assigned.
16.

Assists medical staff and hospital departments with requested laboratory records and test results.
17.

Prints, faxes, and distributes patient reports per laboratory policy.
18.

Performs necessary clerical functions including registration of courier specimens.
19.

Assists secretaries and other laboratory departments when workload permits.
20.

Other duties as assigned.

Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery. Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each. 3. Maintains asepsis with appropriate hand washing between patients 4. Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures by cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment as needed according to department policy. 5. Able to assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation - makes appropriate physician contact for intervention. 6. Provides complete and competent ventilatory management on adult, pediatric and neonatal patients 7. Responds to Code Blue situations quickly and efficiently and performs CPR as needed. 8. Consistently exchanges opened or unlocked carts and restocks crash cart post code. 9. Uses Two Patient Identifiers on all patients 10. Documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service. Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage. 11. Intervenes appropriately in the event of adverse drug reaction. 24. Ensures medication cart/pyxis security is maintained and ensures medication is not left unattended. 25. Reacts efficiently to emergency situations by adhering to policies and protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. 26. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Patient's family is included in teaching as appropriate 27.
