Performs venipunctures, and obtains/prepares blood specimens in accordance with Piedmont policies and procedures.
Assembles equipment such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection Devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into appropriate collection tube.
Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
Proficient in finger sticks when applicable.
Processes specimens according to test requirements. (i.e. spinning, separation, freezing).
Enter test orders and diagnosis codes in computer system.
Determine reference lab destination according to patient insurance type.
Corrects, sorts, and delivers lab reports to appropriate ordering physician.
Follow-up on all pending and missing results as needed.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
One year related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Phlebotomy Certificate from a medical training facility along with 2 years of clinical experience required.
