Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist and functions as a laboratory professional who performs specimen collection techniques or specimen collection instructions that include, venipuncture, capillary draws, sweat chloride collections, urine collection instruction and specimen culture collection instruction.
Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:
Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
Responsible for specimen accessioning as assigned.
Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
Performs proper drug screen collection and processing as assigned.
Answers laboratory department phone calls.
Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.
Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient centered manner.
Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.
Performs sweat chloride collections as assigned.
Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform phlebotomy procedures appropriate to the age of the patient.
Must have basic computer skills.
Demonstrates professional behavior and works collaboratively with the team and all stakeholders.
Maintains good communications and a suitable working relationship between the phlebotomy section and other laboratory sections, other hospital employees, patients, and visitors.
Required Education / Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy/medical assistant program with clinicals or previous phlebotomy experience
Basic computer skills and strong customer service skills
Experience working in the clinical setting preferred.
Working Environment:
This is a technical or service environment.
