Summary

Reports to Director or Assistant Director. This position obtains specimens in outreach facilities by phlebotomy or other methods and assists the laboratory staff with outreach processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives requests for laboratory testing from physicians, nursing homes and others and maintains a record of these orders.

  • Collects and properly labels specimens.

  • Processes and accesses blood samples for laboratory testing by capillary or venous puncture. Obtains other specimens for laboratory including urine, swabs and stool. Assures the appropriate timing of collections is maintained.

  • Responsible for outreach staff education in regards to sample collection and specimen stability requirements.

  • Monitors expiration dates and supply levels at hub, phlebotomy draw tray and all outreach facilities, and distributes stock as requested or needed to all facilities.

  • Follow exact procedures, including those for sample handling, methods and record keeping.

  • Observes safety regulations.

  • Keeps all patient information confidential.

  • Maintains professionalism and courtesy in encounters with patients, visitors, hospital staff and clients, both in actions and appearance.

  • Maintains Beacon vehicle and hub in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Reports any unusual requests to the Lab Outreach Coordinator.

  • Performs assigned tasks under minimal supervision.

  • Ensures that work is complete and checks with Lab Outreach Coordinator before leaving for the day.

  • Establishes own work priorities as instructed.

  • Follows hospital personnel policies and procedures.

  • Participates in continuing education programs.

  • Cooperates with fellow associates and outreach facilities' staff to provide quality patient care.

  • Brings problems directly to Supervisor.

  • Reports to work area as scheduled.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Daily travel throughout Elkhart, St. Joseph and Marshal Counties regardless of conditions other than red flag.

  • Maintain centrifuges located at each outreach facility (monitors dates for annual PM's and troubleshooting when not functioning as expected) and transport to and from facility and hospital when necessary.

  • Process samples at facilities and transport specimens to hospital.

  • Communicates via Doc Halo regarding facility needs (STAT add-on, pickups and supply needs).

  • Cancel and reschedule labs unable to obtain.

  • Regular communication with outreach facility in regards to patient identification, location and rescheduled labs.

  • Enter orders for lab tests in LIS, generates bar code labels and properly label specimens.

  • Assures completeness of all test requisitions for the patient names, DOB, diagnosis, room number, date, physician, time and test(s) ordered. In addition, any other relevant orders from the physician or required information for the laboratory must be obtained.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.

  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

  • Complies with established organization and department policies.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of high school diploma (with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred). Minimum of one year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical or related experience is preferred. Completion of a phlebotomy training program or experience preferred. Qualifies as testing personnel for moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR.493.1423. Valid driver's license in good standing required.

  • This position as complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct. Must also comply with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.

  • Attendance at one in-service each year to review hospital policies and procedures is mandatory or view staff orientation presentation on the intranet and turn in quiz to Human Resources.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.

  • Involves travel to various off site locations for pick up or delivery of specimens or supplies.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
