The Phlebotomist/Clerical is responsible for collecting and processing patient specimens for analysis & acting as support staff for lab by assisting in secretarial functions.


  • Maintains collection tray and working area in a sanitary condition.

  • Follows proper patient identification policy.

  • Draws blood from patients and returns specimens to laboratory for analysis to establish procedures.

  • Labels all specimens with date, initials and time collected.

  • Accurately logs in date and time drawn of all specimens in the lab computer system.

  • Prepares specimens for testing which includes specimen centrifugation, separation and distribution; ensuring specimen integrity for testing acceptability.

  • Courteously answers incoming departmental calls, answers questions regarding testing status, results availability; refers technical questions to technologists.

  • Aliquot all referral specimens in appropriate containers and store at appropriate temperature and location.

  • Perform pending list review at designated intervals throughout the day

  • Locate specimen if test(s) are added and refer to technologist for further implementation

  • Assist in compilation and organization of quality control data

  • Monitor supplies inventory

  • Perform clerical duties, not limited to, filing, shredding, record storage, copying, faxing

  • Uses lab computer to generate labels, reports, and inquiries as needed.

  • Assists couriers and clerical personnel when necessary.

  • Assists with supply inventory and stocking of received supplies.

  • Responsible in an appropriate manner to Stat, Timed and Routine orders.

  • Reviews all computer printouts on patient phlebotomy requests for pertinent demographic and clinical information. Knows what information is important and uses it for proper handling of each patient or notifies others in the department for this information.

  • Follows isolation procedures when necessary, abides by OSHA regulations.

  • Adheres to patient privacy policies by keeping clinical information and diagnosis confidential.

  • Prioritizes duties according to requests, location and specimen priority.

  • Refers questionable matters to management or technical staff.

  • Attends in-services and department meetings as required. Participates in pathology quality improvement, attends and participated in lab in-services.

  • Acts as receptionist and resource person to patients, staff, physicians and clients

  • Registers clients in a prompt, efficient, and courteous manner.

  • Accurately performs all computer functions within the laboratory department

  • Sorts and receives specimens ensuring proper tests are ordered and labeled correctly

  • Responsible for ordering, labeling, and shipment of referral specimens within a specific time

  • Compares all lab test orders with computer to ensure near zero error correction rate.

  • Courteously answers the phone and identifies self, ensuring call is appropriately screened and routed,

and takes complete and accurate messages


1.Minimum High school Graduate or equivalent.

2.Certified as a phlebotomy technician by a national certification exam preferred.

3.Computer experience preferred

4.Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
