Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director, Laboratory Administrative Director, and Supervisor of Specimen Procurement and Dispatch Services, primary duties include Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing, and Customer Service. Position Requirements: High school diploma or GED, recent graduate of phlebotomy program and/or one year work experience in a hospital setting, certification as a Phlebotomist preferred. Specific skills, knowledge and/or competencies needed are: work independently, functional knowledge of the concepts of electronic information handling, attention to details, thorough, concise, accurate documentation, function as a member of a team, handle multiple priorities in a high volume setting and handle confidential material with maturity, sensitivity and discretion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to determine phlebotomy technique appropriate for the age and condition of the patient, and to perform blood collection using the following methods: Venipuncture, Skin Puncture, Arterial Puncture.

2.Follows the patient identification procedure.

3.Performs phlebotomy on patients from all locations i.e. inpatient, outpatient, and pre-op.

4.Follows the scripted dialogue using the "key words at the key times."

5.Travels to health care agencies within the county and to private homes to perform phlebotomy. Must have reliable transportation when collecting from off-site locations.

6.Schedules an efficient itinerary considering the needs of the patient and in cooperation with the supervisors.

7.Receives specimens from various areas of the hospital, clinic, and outside providers into specimen receiving area, verifying proper specimen requirements and labeling.

8.Performs duties involved with registering clinical specimens and ordering tests using the different computer systems.

9.Delivers processed specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory for testing.



  1. Prepares specimens that are shipped to reference laboratories.

  2. Provides customer service support for questions related to specimen requirements, test order entry, results, etc. to all customers in a professional manner.

  3. Uses proper requisitioning procedures to various health care agencies and ensures that the necessary materials for requisitioning are available.

  4. Assists in orienting new staff and student interns.

  5. Actively participates in in-service and continuing education programs to broaden general working knowledge.

  6. Participates on teams and special projects when asked.

  7. Upholds the Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene Standards of Performance.

  8. May be required to assume responsibilities of a lesser, equal or greater level.
