Join our research group Automation Engineering located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3 9 month internship, and investigate, design and develop software for engineers in diverse application areas such as advanced manufacturing in smart factories, smart grid, intelligent transportation systems, and robotics. Our close contact to different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial applications.

What are my responsibilities?

  • You will contribute to industrial research projects on engineering software for industrial automation with applications in manufacturing and autonomous machines

  • You will transfer current research results from Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence to automation engineering software

  • You will collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in the fields of automation and control solving real-world problems

  • You will implement concepts and solutions in prototypes.

What skills are needed to qualify for this internship?

  • A current student pursuing a PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics

  • PhD topic in one of the following areas: Industrial Software, 3D Graphics, Compilers and Programming Languages, Knowledge Graphs, Machine Learning, Robotics

  • Profound knowledge of computer science and software development

  • Experience in advanced algorithm prototyping

  • Excellent programming knowledge and ability to write reusable code following design patterns in at least one object-oriented language like C++, C#/.NET or Java

  • Experience in embedded programming (ROS, Arduino), graphical user interface development (complex libraries like Unity, MFC, WPF), web development (HTML5, JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, AngularJS, ionic, ASP.NET), data access and manipulation ((no)SQL, XML, JSON), mobile programming, unit and integration testing, and using version control systems (TFS, SVN, Git) under Windows or Linux are all considered a plus

  • Practical experience with industrial automation and programmable logic controllers is a plus

  • Creative software development and problem solving skills

  • Mathematical skills considered a plus (3D geometry, linear algebra, simulations)

  • Ability to conduct research tasks independently and to prepare scientific publications

  • Excellent team working and communication (verbal & written) skills in English

  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts.
