Duties

Summary

The duties of the position are performed in all areas of the Inpatient/Outpatient Pharmacy located at the VAMC Lexington, Kentucky. The incumbent is a rotating, generalized pharmacy technician, who, under the authority of the Chief of the Pharmacy Service, is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items
Responsibilities

The duties of the technician in the Outpatient Pharmacy include but are not limited to:
Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on the Pharmacy's copy of the prescription/order and in the ScriptPro and Vista software when appropriate. After a final check by a pharmacist, prepares the medication for dispensing at the pick-up window or mailing.
Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile).
Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment to include ScriptPro Central, Omnicell, and Q-matic automation.
Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution process.
Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdates on shelves and automated machines.
Monitors inventory needs and relays this information to the appropriate Pharmacy personal.
Works independently in pharmacy mail areas. The duties of the technician in the Inpatient Pharmacy include but are not limited to:
Reads and interprets medication orders, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; prepares the medication for delivery and routinely delivers medications and supplies to patient care areas.
Re-packages medication in the most ready to use form (unit dose) according to established procedures and protocols.
Fills unit-dose carts independently without secondary review.
Properly fills and records ward stock replenishment requests in patient care areas.
Operates and maintains pharmacy equipment to include Next RX, Med Cache, Omnicell, and ATC Profiler.
After medication order(s) are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and notifies pharmacist of any discrepancies.
Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution process.
Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdates on shelves and automated machines.
Monitors inventory needs and relays this information to appropriate personnel. Other duties:
Conducts periodic ward inspection of patient care areas.
Collects drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes as required. Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts Mon-Sun, 7-3:30, 8-4:30, 9:30-6, 3-11, Weekends and Holidays

Qualifications


Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

Experience: One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk :
Certification: PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1.Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2.Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3.Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4.Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5.Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6.Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Physical Requirements:
Work may involve prolonged standing and/or walking.

Working involves lifting of weights up to 40 pounds. Incumbent will be subject to bending and stooping. Transportation of goods from pharmacy to pharmacy will be required.
