Works in conjunction with the Pharmacy Manager in the various activities involving the daily direct supervision of technician functions including but not limited to workflow, call-in, scheduling, automation management and quality process within the pharmacy.


  • Under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager, oversee operations and coordinate workflow of the pharmacy department.

  • Ensure that all work is completed accurately, in a timely manner, and staged for delivery.

  • Assist in interviewing and hiring of pharmacy employees.

  • Conduct pharmacy orientation and training program to pharmacy staff.

  • Assist in scheduling and evaluation of pharmacy technicians.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing during call-ins, inclement weather, or periods of increased workload.

  • Ensure all policies and procedures are being followed by pharmacy staff.

  • Assist pharmacy buyer on inventory control and management activities.

  • Ensure that all packaging equipment and automation is properly maintained.

  • Monitor workflow and all quality assurance processes for pharmacy.

  • Assist with development and evaluation of departmental standard operating procedures.

  • Handle all administrative and disciplinary actions according to company policy.

  • Evaluate and review associate performance daily, and prepare annual reviews.

  • Ensure all customer calls are answered in an accurate and efficient manner, while providing and achieving exceptional customer service.

  • Ensure adherence to all Board of Pharmacy, JCAHO, CMS and FDA standards.

  • Provide or coordinate any education needed by pharmacy staff.

  • Conduct regular meetings of pharmacy staff.

  • Practice and adhere to the "Code of Conduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement"

  • Personally perform any and all pharmacy technician duties as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager.

  • Supervisory Duties:

  • Supervise pharmacy technicians.

  • Interview, hire, and train employees.

  • Plan, assign, and direct work.

  • Appraise performance, and reward/discipline employees.

  • Address complaints, and resolve problems.

  • Promote and foster a professional, positive, dynamic team environment through exemplary leadership


Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:

High school graduate or equivalent. At least three (3) years of previously effective supervisory or lead pharmacy technician experience. Prior Pharmacy Technician Experience in Hospital or Long Term Care. Must be comfortable using multiple software programs. Must be organized and possess effective time management skills.

Preferred Certification/Licensing:

Current New Jersey Pharmacy Technician License in good standing

Advanced Pharmacy Technician Certification.

The Pharmacy Buyer maintains and manages appropriate levels of approved Formulary medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Assures necessary storage requirements are met at all times. Reviews invoices for accurate pricing, correct line item billing and authorize payment in a timely fashion to meet discount terms and AP requirements. Obtains emergency or non-Formulary drugs under specific direction of department management. Organizes and coordinates monthly physical inventory and return of unused/unnecessary goods. Responsibilities A day in the life of a Pharmacy Buyer at Hackensack Meridian includes: * Organize and maintain appropriate amounts of routinely stocked drugs and supplies. Set inventory levels at a par that assures adequate stock for patient needs and avoids product expiration. * Receive and distribute medications. Process invoices and internal requisitions according to policy. Coordinate return of shipping errors and receipt of credits. * Monitor stock to ensure proper storage conditions at all times. * Monitor pricing from wholesaler and manufacturers to ensure correct billing. Bring discrepancies immediately to the attention of Pharmacy Manager. * Maintain proficiency in utilizing purchasing and contracting software to develop and run reports necessary for appropriate decision-making. * Provides staff with a daily backorder listing; works with clinical team to devise alternate therapies when medications are not available. * Segregate all medications and supplies that are defective, outdated or otherwise unusable to assure they are not released. Coordinate and oversee routine return and/or destruction of such products. * Coordinate and communicate all required information regarding product recalls. Maintain a log of all recalls and disposition of affected stock. Coordinates the pulling of recalled medications from all ADM machines. * Keep direct supervisor informed of unusual purchases and/or product movement. Provide data for monthly budget reports. * Monitor for and report any suspicion of medication or product diversion or theft. * Coordinate and maintain appropriate documentation of all products borrowed or loaned to others. Reconcile replacements at the end of each month. * Organize and coordinate monthly physical inventory. * Stock inventory areas * Bar coding: Works to install, improve and maintain inventory related technology. * Works effectively with other buyers to ensure cost effective inventories. Coordinates the purchasing and distribution of restricted contract items as well as the sharing of high end medications. Qualifications Knowledge, Education and Skills Required: * High school diploma or equivalent. * Typing and computer skills to utilize PC applications for purchasing. * Integrity to work with Controlled Substances and items which could be diverted. Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred: * Understanding of drug products; e.g. generic/brand names or critical nature of medication needs. * Prior experience with purchasing in health care (i.e. medication, DME) Required Certification/Licensing: * Active New Jersey Pharmacy Technician license in good standing.
