BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Provides support under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. This includes preparing medications to be dispensed, medication stock maintenance, record keeping, medication billing, and medication compounding. In addition, provide specialized services to the department of pharmacy in the role of hazardous compounding and regulatory compliance activities.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum Education

  • High School/GED Required

  • Minimum Work Experience

  • 3 years experience as hospital pharmacy technician required

  • Required Licenses/Certifications for position

  • Current registration with the TN Board of Pharmacy required.

  • State Board approved Technician Certification for CPhT status required.

  • Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician required (CPhT-Adv)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced computer skills

  • Relevant experience in software or tools for specialized role of hazardous medication compounding

  • Basic math skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • All under the direct supervision of a pharmacist who is beyond his or her probationary period:

  • Maintains competencies for general pharmacy technician duties to assist operations as assigned.

  • Performs advanced operational roles including hazardous drug sterile compounding.

  • Actively plans, coordinates, and supports the pharmacy services with a proactive approach to specialized services.

  • Demonstrates advanced level proficiencies regarding technology used for performing specialized services.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with math calculations.

  • Prepares/selects age-appropriate medication for compounding, filling, and dispensing.

  • Provides a double or triple check to pharmacists prior to dispensing.

  • Prepackages and labels medications into unit doses from bulk supply when applicable.

  • Maintains accurate records including all regulatory logs.

  • Appropriately prioritizes medication orders.

  • Ensures equipment operation and maintenance.

  • Advanced level skills in compounding non-sterile and sterile preparations when applicable including hazardous preparations.

  • Appropriate use of pharmacy automation including discrepancy resolution & billing adjustments.

  • Demonstrates a clean and organized workflow.

  • Maintains the pharmacy environment.

  • Follows policy concerning medications with special requirements.

  • All annual competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due.

  • Receives and processes pharmaceutical deliveries from vendors as appropriate, and places on shelves in accordance with established protocol and procedure.

  • Reconciles and records all daily cash and non-cash transactions when applicable; deposits and records all insurance payments when applicable.

  • Restocks medication rooms with medication inventory, reconciles non-administered doses when applicable.

  • Reports unusual occurrences with inventory to the manager or lead pharmacist in their absence.

  • Follows all current policies and procedures of ETCH, Pharmacy, and State and Federal laws.

  • Stays aware of drug shortages and backorders.

  • Assessing regulatory compliance standards as assigned.

  • Effectively trains new interns or technicians when assigned.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
